WITH an innovative two-cylinder engine, Fiat’s 500 TwinAir slashes'

carbon dioxide,emissions to just ^ 95g/km and fuel economy is rated at a heady 69mpg.' ' - ■ ’

' This two cylinder'engine claims to B y A N D Y feN R IG r il ' V

be the cleanest petrol powerplant in" the world. Best of all, you still get a < relatively punchy 85bhp and the 500’s cheeky styling.-We’re constantly be- ■ ing pressurised to tighten the purse, strings but Fiat proves'it needn’t be. too onerous.

- i '^ i ,

In the past, engine designers have concentrated on optimising the fuel- ling o f an engine, such that we’ve moved from carburettors to electronic' fuel injection and then to common rail architecture and direct injection.Tlie other half of the combustion equa tion, the management of air into the engine,-has attracted less attention.

. and Eco; In Eco; torque is restricted' 'ifrom the normal peak of 145Nm to , lOONm and the steering lightens up, ' which makes low-sp.eed manoeuvring even easier. There is a noticeable

■ change in engine note at 2500rpm, the ; powerplant clearly working harder as " the TwinAir system does its thing, i • Unlike many rivals, which offer just one ,‘green’ model in their line: up, usually accompanied by poverty-spec wheel trims and basic trim; Fiat has

..decided to spread the good news and offers the MultiAir engine across the full gamut o f trim levels. .

:

•; There’s even a new sky blue col our,- Volare, which debuts on-the TwinAir. .You’re looking at a pre mium o f around £1,200 to have,a -.

uses the same technology pioneered . on Fiat’s MultiAir engines, replacing; the camshafts of a four-valves-per--. cylinder engine with electro-hydraulic ' control bf the inlet valves, allowing the -. engine to breathe more efficiently. On the road, the 500 TwinAir feels 'f

■The 875cc 85bhp 1.3-litre TwinAir: • 0.9-litre 85bhp 500 Tv/inAir over the conventional entry-level 69bhp l.2- litre model. And that means pricing • for mainstream models mainly in the:: £11,000-£15,000 bracket. There is ■ however, a large £3,000 premium if you want the 500C model with its re- -. tractable open-top."

brisk enough, getting to 60mph in un-: ' der 11s and on to 107mph. Push the ^ two cylinder engine hard and it gets ^ rather vocal, but around town refine-;■ ment is more than acceptable. Two ■ driving modes are offered - Standard,

; It’s hard to argue with the bald facts.'Compared to the best-selling^, conventional 1.2-litre petrol engine v in Fiat’s 500 range, theTwinAir of- v fers 23% more power and yet delivers a 15% reduction in fuel consumption i;

FAMILIES ask a;lot o f their vehicles but few kinds o f car can answer, more bf those >. questions than the large MPV:-The Sharan ■ is Volkswagen’s ld e a o f the ultimate big :

I people carrier, with a variety of seating op - ' tions and punchy yet economical engines.^^^^^^^^ ^

Sliding side doors enhance access, plus all '

the seats themselves offer plenty of space and ■: magically disappear when you don’t need them.

' There are more affordable options in this class - but few better.ones, especially in the popular 2.0

TDI140 diesel guise we look at here.'' - ■ • . fBigger though it is, this car is actually about

30kgs lighter than its predecessor, a rabbit- out-of-the-hat trick that must have occupied Wolfsburg’s finest brains for many of the fifteen or so years it took Volkswagen to bring an all- new Sharan to market. As a result, perhaps we shouldn’t be too surprised that it’s actually quite an eager thing to drive on the road. The 2.0 TDI MOPS diesel we tried is the one that most cus tomers will choose, relaxed, refined and with plenty.in reserve for short notice overtaking. Its merits are certainly enough to ensure that ■'

two more powerful options - a 170PS 2.0 TDI diesel and a 200PS 2.0 TSI petrol - will remain

of minority interest. As usual with Volkswagen ^ The people's choice?

. Group products, the clever twin-dutch DSG >

; semi-automatic 7-speed gearbox is available as an option.

. A 220mm increase in length means this Sha ran is nearly five-metres long, as well as being

. 92mm wider and 12mm lower than its immedi ate predecessor. All increases which, as you’ll find from a seat inside, have been put to very good use. Especially at the very back. Entry is' .by optionally electrical sliding doors these days and once in these rearmost chairs, kids will be delighted to find that they sit a little higher than

. those ahead, while their parents will discover that this is one of those unusual things: a 7-

seater that seven fully-sized adults can actually fit into.

i .Second row occupants, who can recline their three individual seats for greater comfort on- longer journeys and slide them by up to 160mm back and forth as required, are even better: looked after, with the option for parents of flip-- up booster cushions for use when needed. For business buyers really wanting to spread out.

there’s a more palatial six-seater version too. When you don’t want the seats, the five rear

ward ones fold flat into the floor in single easy movements, instantly freeing up an enormous 2,430-litres of cargo space that can be extended still further by folding the front passenger seat flat, allowing nearly three metres of load length. With five seats in use, the boot space is as much as.1,339-litres if you make use of the detachable mesh partition that allows cargo to be stacked to the ceiling. Travel 7-up and of course, it’s a total that falls substantially - to 300-litres.

'

.. Like every Sharan'model bar the minority interest 2.0 TSI petrol variant, fuel economy on this 2.0 TDI 140 diesel model is helped by a standard Stop-Start system and regenerative

: braking, which both reduce the workload on the engine.

. : ' The upshot is combined cycle economy at around SOmpg in regular use, whilst emissions are pegged at 143g/km. Sharan buyers can ex pect the usual sturdy VW residual values.'

’ •

and emissions. Yes, Fiat charge you for that privilege, but the asking price isn’t exorbitant and in some cases the additional costs could be recouped very quickly. As well as incurring zero

. road tax costs due to its 95g/km emis sions, the 500 TwinAir is also exempt from London congestion charge fees. It’s probably not the sort of car we’d

recommend to those covering higher mileages but it works extremely effec-

: lively in traffic, its Start&Stop system ' making queuing a curiously serene experience. A combined fuel econo my figure of 69mpg won’t be seen in the urban sprawl and crawl but you should still see a number around the high forties. - '

Although we’d recorrimend the big

ger lOObhp 1.4-litre engine if you’re set on covering larger mileages, the dinky TwinAir powerplant covers all the bases for city driving. Making economies often means going with out some of the things that put a smile on your face. Here’s one budgetary measure that bucks that trend. ‘ ■
