A GIRL ITS

CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS: The birthday girl with her son, Harry (backlight), the Mayor of the Ribble Valley, Coun. Lois Rimmer, and her consort, husband, Gordon.

.byFaiza Afzaal

A CONGRATULATORY card front the Queen was among those received by a Clitheroe woman who cele brated her 100th birthday. Mrs Ellen Parker, who ts a

resident at Beech Grove Resi dential Care Home, Clithe roe, also received a visit from the Mayor of the Ribble Val ley, Coun. Lois Rimmer, and. a birthday party was arranged

■ by the staff, including a cake made by the resident chef.

■. Born and brought up in Burnley, Mrs Parker went to work in the mill as a weaver at

; the age of 14. She worked at the same mill as her mother, who was her supervisor. She married Harry Parker

in April, 1934, at St Stephen’s Church, Burnley, and the couple had one child, Harry

Douglas, who was born in Au- gust,1942.

: • For a short while the newly

weds lived in a council house, but in 1935 they bought their

- first home in Barden Lane, Burnley, where they lived most of their married life. . Sadly, Harry died in 1987 and in ,1999 Mrs Parker moved to Waddington. Due to ill-health she moved to Waddington Hospital Cot-

' tages where she would be su pervised by the warden there and her son and daughter-in- law, Sandra, who live in Wad- dington.' She left the cottages in 2006

due to increasing ill health and moved to Beech Grove. Her son, Harry said: “Whilst

she has been at the home she has received exceptional care, which no doubt has contrib uted to her reaching her 100th birthday.” '

by Charles Bowman, and the Freemasons Country Inn^ in Wisweli, run by Steven Smith, have both been acclaimed for ■. the quality of their food. ;
