School’s back Ribchester School playground was full again with a hordes of lively children, dressed in their bright red jumpers. All were busy swap ping stories of their holiday adventures before suddenly, becoming aware of the change that had happened while they
have been away. Young pupils have moved up a class, and for a few min utes, school feels unfamiliar, with the big ones absent.
Harvest The harvest festival at St Wilfrid’s Church, Ribchester, on Sun day is especially for children. It will take a slightly different form to make it as child-friendly as possible, to encour age the younger

The service will still have the usual com ponents: hymns, prayers, readings and a version of the Creed with which children can iden tify. There will not be a Eucharist at the 10-30 a.m. sen'- ice, but there will be a said communion service at 9 a.m. Tlie service will endorse the Bishop’s Har vest Appeal, which this year takes “Wa ter” as its theme.

Spire fund Last Saturday night’s Autumn Evening at Aureol House in Sabden was a huge success. Almost £1,120 was raised for the Spire Fund at St Nicholas’s Church following the evening that included supper and drinks, a raffle and tombola and a chance to view the beautiful gardens that -have been open to the public twice this year as part of the National Gardens Scheme. Supper of salmon, cooked meats and salads, a selection of sweets, punch and Pimms were enjoyed by the 80 people who attend ed. Thanks go to all who supported the event and spe cial thanks to Dr and Mrs Lansdell fo r opening up their home and gar-

Bowling The recent charity bowling weekend at Sabden Bowling Club raised £700 for Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley. A rep resentative from the hospice, Mr Ken Ashby, went along to collect the cheque from mem bers of the club and thanked them for their continu ing support. The money was raised at the Alan and Anita Whalley Rosebowl doubles competi tion, in which 32 pairs from across East Lancashire and further afield took part. Winners were Dave Walker and Chris Livesey won the trophy and £160. The competi tion was sponsored by Bailey and Gar rett (Chemists) Ltd., of Burnley, and Intersoft Commu nication Solutions. Sabden’s Pauline Stansfield, one of the organisers, thanked the com petition sponsors, the raffle prize do nors who included Clitheroe’s Booths supermarket and Dawsons depart ment store, sup porters and bowlers. The autumn floodlit singles competition is continuing each Tuesday and Thurs day evening at the club. Spectators are always welcome and there is a raffle with cash prizes of £100, £50, £25 and many other prizes.

Last tyeek’s planned ceilidh in aid of St Mary’s Community Community Hall fund had to be can celled due to lack of support.
St Nicholas’s Future events at St Nicholas’s Church, Sabden, include the harvest thanks giving on Sunday, September 26th, at 10-30 a.m., an hour later than usual, fol lowed by a harvest lunch in the hall. The next meeting of the parochial church council will held on Thursday, September 16th, at 7 p.m. in the church institute. The chil dren’s Thursday Club also resumes after the holidays
on September 16th at 6 p.m.
Services Sunday Mass at St Mary’s RC Church is at the new regular time of 11 a.m. with
Mgr John Corcoran. There is no Satur day evening Mass, but there is morning Mass at 9-15 a.m. every Friday when the children from St Mary’s RC School also attend during term time.

Councii Tlie meeting of Sabden Parish Council’s was attended by Couns Antony Haworth (chairman), Ber nard Parfitt, Marion Procter, Michael Hodds, Michael Calvert, Jean Hay- thornthwaite and John Shorter, plus five members of the public. A dis cussion took place with members of the Holme Com mittee about the possibility of a per manent site for the annual bonfire to assist with costs and health and safety is sues. It was agreed that members of the Holme Committee will look at possible sites and return to the parish council to discuss the options and feasibility by December. In the meantime permis sion was granted for this year’s bon fire and fireworks display to go ahead on the lower Holme field as usual on Saturday, Novem ber 6th. Members voted six to one in favour of this, pro viding that a copy of the insurance certificate is seen prior to the event and that the area is re-turfed as soon as possible afterwards. Permission was also granted for the Holme Committee to hold the annual switching on of the crib and Christ mas tree lights on Sunday, December 12th, at the St Ni cholas’s Avenue, Padiham Road junction. A villager asked if there had “ been any progress with proposals for a footbridge at Bull Bridge but the par ish council was not aware of any de velopments. It was agreed to accept a quotation of £867 for spares and re pairs to the zipwire cableway on the Holme play area as it is a very popular piece of equipment. An update was given on recent decisions by Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Planning Commit tee. Proposals for eight affordable homes at land off
Whalley Road, Sab den, had been ap proved. Regarding ongoing application no. 3/2010/0001, amended plans for regeneration of site at land off Watt Street, the parish council had no objections as the amended plans address issues pre viously raised re garding the density
of site and car park ing.
A representative from RVBC has contact ed the parish coun cil with a view to conducting a Hous ing Needs survey in Sabden. Council lors felt that as it has been some years since a survey was carried out it would be benenficial. The chairman and vice- chairman will meet the representative to discuss the mat ter further.
Coun. Parfitt reported on a tour of the vil lage he had under taken with wheel chair user Joanne Wray and they had suggested a number of pavements which could be improved to aid wheelchair us ers and the disabled. They will now meet a representative of Lancashire County Council Highways Dept (eastern di vision) to discuss th e se fu r th e r . Joanne had previ ously contacted the parish council to [joint out the diffi culties experienced in manoeuvring many of the pave ments in Sabden.

Coasting along on two wheels
A NEW 170-mile coast-to-coast cycle route, skirting the Ribble Valley, will be officially opened to the public this Saturday (Septem ber 11th).

es from Morecambe on the west coast to Bridlington on the east coast, with riders passing through magnificent landscapes includ ing the Lune Valley, the Forest of Rowland Area of Outstand ing Natural Beauty (AONB), the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale AONB. The new route, which uses cy
cle tracks and roads, has been de veloped by sustainable transport charity Sustrans and its partners and is the latest addition to the National Cycle Network, which now extends to more than 12,600 miles across the UK and carries more than a million walking and cycling journeys every day. Each stage of the new route
will be ridden on Saturday, with celebrations taking place along the route through Lancashire and Yorkshire. Renowned British designer and Sustrans patron Wayne Hem
ingway will launch the new route from its Lancashire start point at The Bastion on the Promenade in his home town of Morecambe. He said: “I’m thrilled to be a part of launching this brand new route. “Morecambe is a special place
for me as I grew up here and re member riding my bike around as a child.”
