Scourge of the scammers Jim finally calls it a day

by Duncan Smith

HE has been threatened with a gun, led successful campaigns to get the law changed and helped thousands of people across Lancashire who have been ripped off.

But now Jim Potts, the custom

er’s friend, is retiring after a 41-year career in Trading Standards. Jim j'oined Lancashire County

Council as Chief Trading Stand ards Officer in 1986. He took its Trading Standards Service from obscurity to one of the UK’s high est performing and best value serv ices, dealing with more than 40,000 new consumer problems each year. The service also advises and regu lates more than 30,000 Lancashire businesses. In a career that has taken him

to Cheshire, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester en route to Lancashire, Jim has a few no table firsts: he was the first trad ing standards officer to appear on

Jim’s achievements include cam paigning for a change in the law on life-saving improvements in the safety of sea-going pleasure craft, and the banning of dangerous and nuisance fireworks including bang ers and better controls over their sales period.

Thanks to Jim’s work in raising

the profile of the county council’s trading standards service, it is now nationally regarded as a leading light in many areas, including tack ling rogue doorstep callers and rogue traders. “I’ve been incredibly lucky to

TICKETS are now available for a “fun walk” around Clitheroe to raise funds for two worthwhile charities. The event, which is being organised by the Mayor of Clitheroe

Coun. Alan Yearing and Mayoress Mrs Susan Yearing, will raise funds for their two chosen charities, OJ’s Sensory Interaction Trust, which supports children with autism and their families, and Crossroads Care. The walk will be held on Sunday, September 26th, at 4-30 p.m.

setting off from the Castle Gates in Clitheroe. Concluding with a quiz and a meal. Tickets are priced £8 per person and available from Janet Meloy, the town mayor’s secretary, on 01200 424722, or from the mayor or mayoress on 01200 423138.

Bible stories, action songs, dra ma, craft and games all based on the stories of fisherman-turned- disciple Peter. With help from purple-haired

puppet Captain Ketchup, the youngsters learnt about seam stress Dorcas, the lame man at the temple gates, the ascension

and the story of Cornelius. This was the fifth time vol

unteers from Trinity had run a summer holiday club and Jean Robinson, who was one of the organisers, said: “Everyone who came along, both the children and those that helped us, had a really great time.”

at everyone’s fingertips, it is vital that the Trading Standards Service continues to stand up for consum ers and honest businesses to make Lancashire a fair and safe place to do business. “I am looking forward to having

more time to indulge in my passions for fishing, gardening and walking, starting with Hadrian’s Wall at the end of August. County Councillor Albert Atkin

son, the cabinet member respon sible for Trading Standards, said: “As I travel around Lancashire, I am regularly reminded of the value people in the county attach to the Trading Standards service. “As a result of Jim’s work, thou-,

sands of people in the county have been protected against a wide range of scams and fraud. The county is a much safer place and I’d like to of fer my sincere thanks to Jim and his team for that. “I’d like to finish by passing on my

very best wishes to Jim and his fam ily for his future retirement.”

Centre toasts new graduates

MEMBERS of staff from Ribblesdale Chil dren’s Centre in Clitheroe are celebrating their own graduations. Nicola Brooks, Nichola Duane and Fiona

Owen have all achieved a BA (Hons) de grees in Early Years’ Education and Child care, while Amy Brunskill has achieved a foundation degree in the same subject and plans to move on to a BA (Hons) degree this year. A further six employees will either continue or embark on the same course. The Queen’s Road centre, which has a

strong commitment to ongoing staff devel opment, believes that the knowledge and experience gained is reflected in the quality of education and care delivered throughout the setting. The successful graduates will add to the already considerable experience and qualifications of the centre staff.
