Poetry fever on its way to 50 Clitheroe shops

MORE than 50 Clitheroe shops will display poems next week in a unique collaboration between Ribble Valley Borough Council, the Clitheroe Chamber of Trade and Commerce and the Pennine Lancashire Poetry Stanza. The “Shop!” project will see

by Faiza Afzaal The poetry will include original

work by the Pennine Lancashire Poetry Stanza alongside work by established and well-known poets, such as Jean Sprackland, whose poem, “Hands”, will be displayed m the Castle Chippy, Moor Lane. The window displays will include

a 5ft. wall hanging of Clitheroe au thor Jane Eagland’s poem “I am a Knitted Woman” at Designer Knitting Yarns in Moor Lane. The store will also host poetry

readings by Jane England, Rachel Davies, who is a student of Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, and Clitheroe poet Jenny Palmer at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on September 18th. A selection of poems will also

be published in an anthology called “Here is Where the Candy Sticks: Poems about Shopping in Clitheroe”, edited by Jo Harding, who runs Clitheroe Books, and Ribble Valley Borough Council’s principal communications officer, Theresa Robson, and produced by Design 360 Ltd, of Stonyhurst.

Second place for forum

A YOUTH project narrowly missed the top prize in the National Lottery Awards. C li th e ro e Youth Forum

projects from across the UK to take home a runner-up trophy at The National Lottery Awards, which was broadcast live on Sat urday from London’s Round house on BBC One and hosted by John Barrowman. Representatives from Clithe

award for Best Heritage Project, Mel Diack, of the forum, said; “We are absolutely delighted to ■ have been named a runner-up. “We beat hundreds of other

project, allowing us to pay tribute to the servicemen and women of Clitheroe and across the Ribble Valley who lost their lives during the Second World War and to educate young people about their heritage. “The awards have been a great

opportunity to highlight how we’ve put our funding to good use and show anyone who has ever played the lottery the differ ence their money makes.” The forum used lottery fund

ing to educate and engage local young people about their herit age by involving them in the cre ation of a book of remembrance, a braille book, website and film to remember the 72 servicemen and women from Clitheroe who were killed in the Second World War. On Monday Ribble Valley

Mayor Coun. Lois Rimmer, host ed a civic ceremony at the Rib ble Valley Council Chambers to mark the forum’s achievement. • There is a dedication service for the roll of honour and braille book at Clitheroe Parish Church on Monday, September 13th, starting at 7 p.m.
