Tough start lor the Maroon and Gold

CLITHEROE RUFC started the league season - after promotion following a league reorganisation - with a frustrating defeat at Orm- skirk. After absorbing an opening 10

minutes of pressure, Clitheroe pressed the opposition tiy line, and the home defence had little answer but to slow the ball down to prevent a score. The ref eree’s patience snapped, and an Ormstark fonvard found himself having 10 minutes in the sin bin. With the ascendant' numeri

cally, Clitheroe mavimised with a well worked backline move after the forwards provided good qual ity ball, passing down the line for James Dickinson to touch down. Again the Ormskirk forwards

killed the ball, but the referee allowed the number eight to stay on the pitch. When the numbers evened up, Ormskirk’s centre crossed the line only to apparently drop the ball - the referee was unsighted and awarded the try. Before half-time Ralph Rigby

was whisked to the local A&E for five stitches in a nasty looking head wound, and there was a firther injury scare to stand off Watson as he also took a blow to the head. With the Maroon and Gold in

slight disarray, Ormskirk capital ised and scored again before half time to move the score on to 12-5. The home team dominated the

opening 20 minutes of the second half and scored hvo more tries and converted one. Clitheroe mounted an attack into the opposition 22 metre area, and there they camped for the closing 20 minutes of the game, with attempts to cross the line stilled by Ormskirk, who killed the ball repeatedly, and the match ended in a frustrating manner. Training for the seniors con

tinues every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Find out more at www.clithe- roerugby.com.

RUGBY The seconds went down 31-27

at home to Aspull seconds in their first league game of the season in League 5 North. Within 20 minutes, Clitheroe

raced into a 15-0 lead with a tty, conversion and penalty from ex- Colt Jack McKenna and a try from Ben Rigby. The other player to get in on

the scoring was centre Ben Rigby who anticipated well in midfield to intercept and scamper 30 yards to the tiy line. The Aspull backs got hold of

some ball and shipped it wide effectively. A couple of close ref ereeing decisions in their favour helped their cause, and in the matter of 10 minutes they hit back with bvo tries. - The highlight of the match fol

lowed as Aspull attempted to relieve pressure by booting the ball deep into Clitheroe’s half. Capstick picked up the .ball in his own 22 and set off down the left wing, using the support to exe cuted a couple of excellent shim mies and scorch 80 yards to dot down under the posts. Aspull then applied pressure,

and with half-time beckoning and a Clitheroe scrum on their own line, the ball squirted out of the scrum directly to the Aspull scrum half, who darted over from short range. After 55 minutes, the visitors

scored a converted try to take the lead for the first time, before, as Clitheroe were defending on their own 22, the ball popped to Rigby who sprinted 70 yards to score under the posts. The lead was back in Clitheroe’s hands but only for two minutes as the Aspull stand off showed a clean pair of heels to score out on the left. The final 10 minutes were as frenetic but Aspull held on.

Oxenhope......................4 Chatburn........................6 CHATBURN started the new

season with a high-scoring away win. Playing up the hill in the first

half, the locals set up ready to face an onslaught of attacks, but started brightly, with the new back four dominating both on the ground and in the air.

A fairly even first 20 minutes m m

saw both Bicknell and Holgate go close, before, after half an hour, Oxenhope scored the opener after a comer wasn’t properly cleared, and a lucky bounce saw it drop to ah home player, who poked the ball home from five yards. Chatbum went on the offen

sive, and a powerful mn from new centre back Ashworth saw him ride several tackles before, with just the goalkeeper to beat, he unselfishly squared to Bicknell for an easy tap-in. In the second half, Chatburn

started to control the game, and the breakthrough came when an in-swinging Hodges comer found Ashworth’s head, and he powered a header home. Chatbum then became their

own worst enemies, when a pioneering attitude to attack ing saw them caught on the break, and a long ball was met by an off-side-looking striker, who slotted the ball home. Unperturbed, Chatbum

continued to attack with pas sion and flair, and the third goal wasn’t long in coming when Hodges ran onto a loose ball in the box and powered a shot home. The locals continued to

attack, but an Oxenhope break saw a powerful cross And the head of the striker to level matters again. Oxenhopc sensed victory and started to push on, but it

was to prove costly as Holgate used a turn of pace to race onto a slack back pass and cheekily lob the keeper. Chatbum once again got

caught on the break though as a nice piece of football saw Oxenhope equalise with only minuets left on the clock. However, a free kick on

halfway allowed Evans to float a ball to the back post, and Holgate rose unchallenged to find the bottom corner. And at the death, Dewhurst

put in a emnehing challenge to set up a counter attack, and Hqigate broke once again, using his blistering pace to power forxvard, and with a chance to claim his hat- trick, he squared the ball to Dewhurst, who had made up half the field, to coolly slot into the corner for a 6-4 victoiy. • Dog Inn begin their Harry

Marshal Jim meets stars!

LOCAL golfer Jim Tierney rubbed

L ! S

shoulders with the „ biggest names in world golf while carrying out mar shalling duties at ^ the British Open B at The Royal and g Ancient Golf Club at St Andrew’s in Scotland. Tierney, who is a mem ber of Mytton Fold, is part of a select group of Brit ish Army personnel who provided personal protec tion on the golf course for golfers in what the R and A consider to be high profile matches. During his week at St Andrew’s Jim accommpanied

the following golfers during their practice and cham pionship rounds - Tom Watson, Rory Mcllroy, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickleson, Relief Goosen and the even tual winner Louis Oosthuizen. Tierney is seen here with Lee Westwood on the

13th green and with Andrew Colthart on the famous Swilken Bridge. At Clitheroe. the Lister Cup on Thursday - a com

petition against par - was won by Gill Farthing (+4), ahead of Chris Stokes (-F2) and Diane Buttle (level). A busy few days at Stonyhurst Park Golf Club saw

Jack Simmons and Chris Simms win the Veterans’ Open with 43 Stableford points, with last year’s win ners Dave Beesley and Jim Sumner being close run ners-up on 42 points. The Captain’s Ambrose Four-man Texas Scramble

was won by Ray Ormerod, John Carrington, Ian Carrington and Hugh Wardle, just pipping by 0.4 shots the team of captain Tony Wright, John Kirk, John Austin and Jim Walker. The Men’s Open on Sunday was a Four Ball Better

Ball Stableford, maximum handicap 28 with % allow ance. In third spot with 37 points was Derek Ingham and Jack Wrenn, runners-up on 40 points were Jim Walker and Jim Swann, and the winners, again with a close finish, coming in with 41 points, were Adam Hayhurst and Tom Harper. Saturday saw Whalley Golf Club hold their annual

singles open competition. A nearly full field from across Lancashire competing for some handsome prizes took to the course to battle it out. The victor on the day was Whalley member John Jobes with a superb four under par Imock of 81-13-68, second was Rob Andrew (Whalley GC) with a solid 71-2-69, and third was Daniel Liles (Whalley GC) 74-3-71, fourth went to Bob Bell (Accrington GC) 85-14-71. The best gross on the day went to Andrew Wray with a level par 72. There were four recorded two’s on the day, going to Rob Andrew, Sam Halstead, Mike Conroy, and Chris Davies Whalley ladies eventually completing the 36 Hole

Hi task competition, the winner was Wendy Green with scores of 100-26-74 and 103-26-77. Best gross went to Jane Smedley. In the September Brooch competiton, the winner

with a score of 103-27-76. The September Medal was played at Mytton Fold Golf

Club in near perfect conditions. The course was awash with sunshine and a gentle breeze tickled the fiagsticks from the south west. The course had firmed up and the fairways were running which refiected in the overall scoring of the field. The first 22 competitors recorded scores of level par or

better, but the top spot, after a back nine countback, went to a first time winner at Myrtton Fold. Gary Aldred shot a remarkable 89-24-65, and beat another fantastic score by Danny Heald, (87-22-65) into second place. In third place, with an equally superb score, was Sam Cowan with 88-

22- 66. The twos competition saw four people dividing the pot.

Damien Fox and Mark Schofield birdied the first, while Garty Davies and Dennis Leaver were one-under at the ninth. In the round-robin Ladies’ Pairs, it was a win for Maureen

Board and Jean Sanderson. In the final of the mbied doubles competition, the match went to the last hole.
