' ^ A CAMPAIGN has been launched to raise

awareness of new birth choices for women in East Lancashire. Blackburn Birth Centre, the first midwife-led birth

marks the beginning of a revolutionary chanse for maternit}' in the area.

In November, a £32m. Lancashire

Women and Newborn Centre will open on the Burnley General Hospital site, incorporating another midwife-led birth centre as well as a brand-new consultant- led maternity unit specialising in complex jjirths. From November, women will no longer have their babies at Royal Black-- burn Hospital.

The final part of the new services will be

Rossendale’s birth centre, which will open m December in Rawtenstall. ,

of Midwifery Sheena Byrom said: We already have a lot of women booked

m for the new birth centres—we have been working with them throughout their preg nancies to make sure they understand the choices available to them, and help pick

the most suitable options for their indi vidual needs. ■ We are really confident that pregnant women know what is available to them,

put pregnancy and birth involve everyone in the community. For more than 30 years, almost every

one has given birth in hospital, although increasing numbers of women have opted tor home birth in recent years. The birth centres will offer the best of both worlds for healthy women, providing

www.clltheroeadvertiser.co.ul< Village fund-raiser saves team Call for smoking ban review Clitheroe Advertiser &Tlmes,Thursday, September 9,2010

EURO MP Paul Nuttall is writing to every North West MP urging them to support a call for the smoking ban in pubs and clubs to be reviewed. A parliamentary Early Day

Motion put forward by Brian Binley, MP, is asking for this review and UK Independence Party MEP Mr Nuttall, whose North West constituency in cludes Ribble Valley, wants every Member of Parliament to support it. “This Motion is an excel

lent move and long overdue. You only have to consider the thousands of public houses

that have closed since the ban was introduced to see why it is needed,” said Mr Nuttall. The proposal calls for the

Government “to conduct a thorough review, supported by consultation with all parties and affected business sectors, on the impact the smoking ban has had on public houses and private members clubs”. “Mr Binley suggests the leg

islation should be amended by allowing segregated smoking areas inside such premises,” said Mr Nuttall. “That is the policy that UKIP has advocat ed ever since the ban came in.”

RESIDENTS turned out in force for a fund-raising extravaganza in aid of a vil lage football team, which has been saved from the brink of collapse. Officials at Sabden FC said

around £1,100 was raised from a charity football match, duck race, barbecue and party en suring the club can continue to

run for another year. Sabdeh Veterans beat the

current team 4 - 3 in the match held at Sabden FC’s ground. Following the game 1,000 plas tic ducks were released into the brook and both adults and children were kept entertained throughout the afternoon and evening with a disco and kara oke at the White Hart pub. Club chairman Mr Alan Bir-

“It is a well-established club

with all its own facilities. But at one point we had no players, no manager and no money. There was about four of us on the committee and we said why do we keep meeting when no one’s interested. But we’ve regenerated interest in the

village and people have ral lied round. I have never seen so many people at a duck race and they were coming from outside the village. “I would say a big thank you

to all the committee members and team members who helped make the day. It involved a lot of hard work and you can’t put a price on that.”
