Do not be bullied over hospital plan

WE wholeheartedly endorse last week’s letter from Dr McKinlay regarding Clit- hcroe Community Hdspital. ■ Tn these uncertain.times, with the

■ changes in our Health Providers, the com munities of Ribble.Valley must be aware

. that our hospital may be vulnerable. . With funding being at a premium we

fessionals. Tlie ease of access and the high quality nursing care, which is given to ter minal, rehabilitation and respite patients, is most valuable. Also in many instances the thoughts of transportation to a large. remote impersonal hospital is very daunt ing, especially for the elderly. It is now more than ever essential that we, the residents and taxpayers of Ribble . Valley, do everything possible to ensure

.an acceptable solution is found. We must give bur total backing behind every worth while plan deemed acceptable by those

• who understand what is needed; -We must not sit back and let ourselves

be bullied into accepting an unsuitable plan arid we, as many others.wc know,

are willing to recruit support to show our solidarity. ANN and TREVOR ROBERTS, Brook Villas, West Bradford

and is totally out of character with the beautiful building of the Inn at the Sta tion next door and the old characterful building of the Railway Station itself op-

Parish councillors backed fun run

I WRITE in response to a letter in the Clitheroe Advertiser dated September 30th concerning the cancelled Fun Run that was to have been held in Simonstone on September 18th. The reasons given for the cancellation

were due to Health and Safely Issues not being put in place prior to the event and the fact that the Parish Council, Ribble Valley Council and the County Council were not being helpful.

Clerk to Simonstone Parish Council I. ROGER HIRST I remember when

the bombs fell FURTHER to your article regarding the bombs that fell on Chatburn, 1 remember

■ thedaywell. The plane circled Clitlieroe first. 1 was

on my way to the dentist, walking alon» Faraday Avenue and it appeared out of nowhere. Suddenly, I was staring up at the pilot and he was staring down at me! It was that low. ■

. Before I had time to decide wliai dan

ger I was in, .if any, as there hadn’t been any air raid warning alert, it flew off in the direction of Chatburn, and we know what happened next.. -

As for the reason why Chatburn was

targeted, one school of thought is that it was a mistake. At the time, the Ro.val jEngineers were stationed at Carlton Mill in Low Moor, Clitheroe. Every day, work parties marched down to Low Moor, pre paring the mill there as their permanent barracks. The description of Hie location was very similar - a large stone building near a river. It was thought more likelv tliat the pilot was looking for that, know'- ing there would be troops there. I’ve often wondered what he was think

ing during those few seconds we stared at each other. What a strange meeting of fates, a German pilot looking for some where to bomb and an English schoolgirl on her way to the dentist!

DID the united groans of French teacliers and the sound of heads banging against a brick wall reach the offices of the Adver-

, tiser and Times last Thursday? If that were so, I hope there were some

red faces. For whatever Monsieur Claude said at the opening of the Delicious Deli and Cafe in Gisburn, it was not ‘ouvre’ as this word does not exist in French. To see this classic mistake on the front page wa.s saddening and made me wonder what else I would find when the newspaper was OUVERT.
