, THOSE who have booked to see “Blazin’ ■
Fiddles” perform at Clitheroe’s The Grand -on Sunday, November 14th, will be in for
. more of a treat than they realise. As well as seeing the multi-talented stalwarts of the folk world, they’ll also get a chance to see
: a local lass return to her roots with support act Stooshie - fast-rising stars of the Cumbrian folk world.. . Based in Keswick, Cumbria, the group are
.well-known in the area, but have never per formed in Lancashire until now. Lead fiddle player Rachel Swift, from Ribchester, was es pecially pleased to come back to perform in her home county. She said: “It’s just brilliant to be playing in .
Lancashire. We all have full-time jobs on top of the band so we tend to perform most of our gigs in Cumbria. This is the first time we’ve ventured to Lancashire, but I’ve wanted to play here for a while, I was just waiting for the right place. I was • amazed with the facilities at The Grand. Work ing at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick, I know what an impact an arts venue can have on the community, so I think it’s simply fantastic that Clitheroe now has such a wonderful asset. The band are especially delighted to be supporting Blazin’ Fiddles, they have worldwide following, so it’s a real honour to support them.” Stooshie is made up of Rachel Swift (fid

Formed in late 2008, their music is rooted in folk but with a splash of rock and funk. They’ll be playing an eclectic mixed bag of traditional folk tunes, self-penned rockers and stompers with the odd weepy, ballad thrown in. ■ EVER heard of a “sharp peg”? Any idea what a “stuffing stick” might be? And where on earth would you use a wedge, and a needle together?: • The Forest of Bowland Area of Out
standing Natural Beauty (AONB) is in viting folk to discover the answer to these, and many other questions at Chipping Village Hall on Saturday, November 6th. As part of its Landscafte Stories her-
itage project, the AONB is organising a free event, where Steve Cottam will dem onstrate the traditional art of rush bot toming. . .
:. , , . Locals and visitors alike are being invit
ed to come along and watch this fascinat ing craft and, if they have them, to bring along their own rush bottomed chairs at the same time. Although visitors without chairs will be more than welcome too! The event is free, although people will
need to book a place. Children are wel come, but need to be accompanied by an adult.
■ ' - Landscape Stories is a community her
itage project which aims to understand and celebrate the Bowland landscape we see today through discovering more about the people and activities that have helped to shape it. Supported by a range of funders, in
cluding the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund, Lancashire County Council and the AONB itself, the two-year project is set to continue until the end of March next year. For further information about Land-

Set put drama in right light
REVIEW: "The Lady from the Sea", at the Royal Exchange, Manchester, until November 6th. Box Office: 0161 833 9833. Website:
www.royalex-
change.co.uk
I KNOW one should praise ■ the dramatist and the actors ■ first, but I feel that one of the ' delights of Ibsen's "Lady from the Sea7, directed by Sarah Frankcom at Manchester's. Royal Exchange Theatre, is the wonderfully subtle but effec-
' tive design by Liz Ashcroft and, and ill particular, the lighting by Chdhine Yavroyan. Together, with a bare stage. . and a few structures and clever
patterns of light, they create a real feeling of a Norwegian - house on the edge of a fiord where Ibsen's characters work through their emotional turmoils. As in oil Ibsen's ploys the focus is on relationships. Here the central crisis is that
of Ellida (Neve McIntosh), the heroine, estranged from her husband Dr. Wongel (Reece Dinsdole). But Wongel's .
. daughters by a previous mar- rioge, Bolette (Sara Vickers) and Hilde (Cotrin Stewart], face their ovvn dilemmas. The return of their cld tutor
Arnholm (Jonathon Keeble) disrupts the life of Bolette, as , does the arrival of the termi- :v; nolly ill, young Lyngsfrand (Somule Collings). The inten- - sity of the parents' emotions -
is balanced by some humour in those of the children. Lyngstrond's naVve comments on the role of o wife provoke laughter, whereas Ellida and Wangel experience an almost; shattering conflict. David Eldridge has adapted
a new version from a literal translation that has managed to retain a feeling of the late 1880s and yet make it accessi ble too modern audience. This is an engrossing production of - a lesser known Ibsen drama, funny, moving and, at times, surprising. The Royal Exchange's next .
production is Euripides' "The .. Bacchae", starting on Novem- ; her lOfh.. - ■ ■
