CHAMPION: Brian Moorhouse's newly- calved heifer was heading just down the road to Gisburn, selling at £1,900 to John Crosier.

IT was “Lancashire Lonk lamb’.’ that.was star of the show earlier this year when it featured in local

. chef Nigel Haworth’s winning main course of Lancashire Hotpot in the BBC’s “Great British Menu”. . ■ Fresh from that accolade,

the Lonk Society held their annual show and sale o f Registered Lonk Rams and females at Clitheroe Auc tion Mart, with trade up on previous years and strong rams very much in demand. Overall champion was

awarded to T. Whitwell and Sons, of Pendleton, whose

Lonk shearling ram sold for an astonishing 3,400 guin eas to Mr Chris Crowther, of Greenfield near Old ham.

Show judge Mr Tom i i

LONK CHAMP: The champion Lonk shearling ram with, from the left, purchaser Chris Crowther, show sponsor Jane Chapman, from Allflex, and vendor Robert Whitwell, from Pendleton.

Robinson, of Slaidburn, gave the reserve champion prize to a gimmer shear ling, again shown by Messrs Whitwell, which sold to M. J. Alpe and.Sons, of Whitewell, near Dunsop Bridge for 350 guineas. Senior rams sold to £504

(averaging £270); shearling rams sold to £3,570 (ave. £496); and lamb rams sold to£115(ave.£110).

Graiidad knows best!

SHOWING he still has a keen eye for a quality cow, Gisburn’s John Crosier picked up the champion animal at the opening Oc tober dairy show and sale at Skipton. After more than 40 years

in dairying Mr Crosier, of Demesne Farm, was forced out by foot and mouth, but was using his expertise to buy on behalf of grandsons William (22) and Michael Oldfield (20), who live at neighbouring Painley Farm. They are building up their dairy herd, which cur rently stands at between 40 and 50. The overall champion.

chosen by judge Colin Whitelock, of Gargrave, was the first prize newly calven heifer shown by Bri an Moorhouse, of Hesper Farm, Bell Busk. Selling for £1,900, she was a first daughter for the Aireburn pedigree herd of the Ge nus test bull Moet Bald- rick. Having calved 10 days before the show, she was giving 30 litres. Higher, quality dairy

cattle were again easy to place. Newly-calven heifers averaged £1,562 and newly calven cows £1,320.'Maid en heifers (20-months-old) sold to £740 and averaged £690.

Not too late for quality

ANYONE who thought the end of October was too late in the season for quality should have looked in the sheep yard on at Gisburn Auc tion Mart. .

. The ewe numbers were swelled

by an entry of 200 dispersal for Martin Carefoot, of Longridge.

• His Mule Shearlings sold to £104, two Crop Mules to £88 and full mouth Texels to £100. Highlight in the ewe section

were huge Suffolk X Cheviot one and two crop ewes from B. & M. Watkinson, of Sessay, which sold for £150. Swaledale ewes from J.

Sunter, of Worsthorne, topped at £72. Herdwick ewes from Gary Pickup, of Hellifield, sold to £56 and averaged £44.44. In the Shearlings a run of 113

Mules from Andrew Rigby, of Slaidburn, were keenly bid to £150 per pen twice, with other pens ranging between £122 and £148. North Country Cheviot Shear lings from J. L. & E. M. Hickson, of Austwick, sold to£130 twice. Sisters Marjorie Sowerbutts,

of Wigglesworth, and Dorothy Doyle, o f Tosside, shared top orice in the Gimmer lamb section.

both achieving £92 with Texel and Beltex cross. Mule gimmers from W. J. & I. France, of Bleasdale, sold to £85. Grassington farmer Henry Hawley’s batch of 80 run ners found new homes in Scotland at £76, £70 and £62. Best of the 50 rams were four

Texel shearlings from Blackburn’s Lucas and Nairey-all selling for £300-i)lus. Suffolk ram lambs from Chipping’s Margaret Petherbridge sold to £175. There was a top price of £60.50

for a pen of Texels from J. Jack- son. ofTodmorden.
