www.bumleyoxpniss.nel Bumtey Reporter,Tbursday, June 3,2010 A NEW service has been set up New service to help families with adopted children is launched
; to give support to families after a child is adopted. - The Post-Adoption Support
Service is Lancashire County Council’s new in-hous'e serv
ice for both adoptive and birth families, and adopted children and adults. About 70 children are placed for adoption in the county each year and, increas ingly, these are children and
young people who needed to be removed from their families, rather than babies given up at birth. The service will offer a range of support services for adoptive families, including
groups for those with newly placed children, advice and support, family days, a newslet ter and a helpline.
j
For birth families, there is help with maintaining “mail-
box” contact with adopted chil dren, and individual support via
; After Adoption, a charity that provides counselling and sup-, port. There’s also counselling : for adopted adults who are con
sidering making contact with their birth families.
; Anyone wanting to know ■ more about the Post-Adoption Support Service can contact them on 08001951183.

summer
POLICE want th e hotly-tipjped bar becue summer to remain a crime free summer. Officers are urging residents to stay
crime aware and ensure they lock all their doors and windows if they go out and al ways keep their house secure if they arc in tlie garden. Patrols will be visiting hot spot areas
and crime prevention posters and leaflets will be delivered in key areas but police want homeowners to take responsibility as well. , Crime prevention co-ordinator PC
Phil Buck has issued the following golden rules; • Always close and lock front and rear
doors even when in the house. • Close and lock side and rear gates
that give access to the back of your home and never leave keys in doors or on open view.
.
- 8 Ensure ground floor windows, and those above flat roofs or kitchen exten sions are closed and locked at night. O Keep removable valuables, particu
larly laptop computers and handbags out of sight.
• • Keep your vehicle in a well-lit area,
preferably in a garage or on the drive. • Never leave property in your vehicle
. lock.
and make sure it’s locked. • Ensure your shed has a good quality ' ; ■ ' -
; • Make sure your home looks occupied at night. PC Buck said: .“Crime is at an all time
low in the county, however of the crime reports we do receive, many involve of fenders sneaking into insecure homes and other buildings like sheds to steal items. “It is tremendously sad to think these
crimes and all the associated worry and upset could have all been avoided, if peo-
• pie had kept their properties secure. “As a police service we have an excel
lent record of catching and convicting ■burglars, but for the victims’-sake, we’d ; rather avoid the crimes where possible. . . “We can do this, if people work with us, listen to our advice, and keep their homes secure.”
New hope for compensation
VICTIMS of the Equitable Life collapse can finally expect compensation, accord ing to Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle. .
; The compensation, he said, should fol low new legislation being pushed for by his Liberal Democrat colleagues. ; The Equitable Life Bill, outlined to the
House last week, will give the Treasury the authority to make payments to poli cyholders or dependents who have been fighting for compensation since 2000. , A previous Liberal Democrat motion
to get compensation for the millions of people involved was defeated in October 2009.
