A LORRY driver from Ciit­ heroe who'was shown on YouTube driving along, a motorway unaware of a car trapped in front of his cab has been told he can keep his li­ cence. - In fact, John Tomlinson was


praised for being “cool and calm” in a crisis during a hearing before


North West Traffic Commission- ■ er Beverley Bell, who said he had no,way of knowing the car was there. •


The incident attracted interna­


tional publicity when it was filmed . on a mobile phone by a passenger in a passing car and later upload­ ed onto internet video-sharing site YouTube. It was viewed by more than half-a-million people around the world and screened on internationalTV news chan­ nels. West Yorkshire Police, who


investigated thejiricident on the A1(M) near Wetherby in Janu­ ary, had already'decided to take no action against Mr Tomlinson following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.' ■ However, Mr Tomlinson was


also summoned to appear at an investigative hearing before North West Traffic Commission­ er Beverley Bell at Warrington. She had the power to take away Mr Tomlinson’s LG'V driving licence, but ruled that he could keep it because he could not see, hear or smell the car. ^ Instead she described the car driver’s manoeuvre as “ill-ad­ vised” and praise’d Mr Tomlinson for remaining ffcool and calm” when he realised what had hap­ pened.
