; the wake of revelations that he directed more than £40,000 of taxpayers’ money over eight years to his secret gay lover.
. Claims for duck houses, moat clean ing and the lucrative “flipping” of homes seemed a distant memory until last week end’s episode of the murky soap opera of
. the pocket-lining skills of everyday West minster folk.

. What I find distateful about the whole affair, is that certain sections of media, and particularly
the.BBC’s 24-hour news
- channel, when the story broke, sought to . present Mr Laws as almost the victim of circumstances - that the whole matter arose out of David Laws’ desire to keep
. his private life private. That’s a load of nonsense! By his own
; admission in his syrupy resignation state ment, David Laws could not “escape the conclusion that what I did was is some way wrong” - i.e it’s a fair cop, guv.
.The dynamic duo of David Cameron PMfefdoHtil PmUh
and Nick Clegg had, reportedly, tried to talk Mr Laws out of resignation from his Cabinet job and after the Minister’s deci sion to go, Cameron told him in a letter that he hoped Mr Laws would, in time, be

able to serve again. This speaks volumes about how they regard the integrity of MPs on the scale of political process. Tlie whole sorry story lias yet to go be
fore a Parliamentary inquiry but, in view of the key words from Mr Laws’ resigna tion statement, the conclusion should be obvious. And so should the conclusion of Mr Laws’ ditliering about whether or not he should stay as an MP. Of course he:
, shouldn’t - the whole trust has gone. So. what should happen now in the
whole issue of MPs’ expenses? We were promised a system, which would ensure that the taxpayers’ pockets would not be picked in future. That clearly is not hap pening. So we should be saying: Look lads and lasses, we just can’t trust you not to abuse the system, therefore we’re scrap ping it.'You get your salary at an increase, but after that, no more. You budget all your expenses out of that - it’s up to you. If you think that’s going to cost too much, then we’ll do the obvious thing and reduce the number of MPs-call it natural wast
age in the same way that thousands of
■ public sector workers are going to be told .when our spending cuts start to bite. Back to David Laws, I find it ironic that - all this has happened to one of the men '
' for five years. ’ ,
• who negotiated the unholy alliance, which ■ handed my Lib Dem vote, alone with' thousands of others, to the Tories in an' undemocratic decision to put David Cam eron in power, and tlien compounded the * treacheiy by seeking to change Parliamen- ' tary rules and cement tlie regime in office '
- In view of the David Laws e.\penses sa»a and the fact that the Tory/Lib Dcm affi
ance shows little stomach for puttins their stitched-uji deal before the elecforate for ratification, I suggest our MPs need a closer watcli than a five-year gap between elections.
r lie opinion, let’s bring in a system under which one-third of them retire every year and we hold elections every vear. That should concentrate minds wonderfully.
, sence passed my vote over to tlic Tories .without a “by your leave”. I’m still waiting
. ' for a reply and can only conclude that, like David Laws, they can’t escape tlie conclu sion that wrong has been done.

A TRAILER carrying three heifers ploughed through the railings at Bawd- lands, Clitheroe, and plunged 10 feet into the street below. Remarkably no one was hurt as tons of masoniy and 50 yards of railings finished up only yards from the terraced houses. • FINE weather during the months of
April and May coincided with an upsurge in vandalism in Waddington. At the Par ish Church meetings, members heard that, among several recently reported in cidents, glass in the village noticeboards had been smashed, plants uprooted and glass broken on one of the petrol pumps on the main street;
A PROBE into child road safety is calling for speeding fine cash to be
spent on children’s playgrounds. Lancashire County Council’s Over
view and Scrutiny investigation into road safety for children and young people concluded that councils and police in the courity are winning the-battle, with a fall in tlfe nunibers killed and seriously in
jured each year. ■ . Watchdog councillors recommended
that proceeds from speed cameras be used for local road safety initiatives - such as to build safe playgrounds to divert chil dren away from the roads - instead of go ing direct to government.
> County Coun. Peter Steen, chairman,,
of the task group, said: “We’ve done a detailed piece of work to look at what more could be done to support child road ■ safety in Lancashire and made a number of recommendations.

sizes for new drivers. “And wliile we know speed cameras are not popular, we believe the evidence shows that when used properly they help to cut road deaths and that more should be done to promote their benefits.” The councillors also backed proposals for a single strategy to combat road deaths across all organisations in Lancashire and to seek backing from health services for future prevention plans. The report will also be used to show other councils what Lancashire is doing - the county is leading the way by develop ing road safety work tlirough Cliildren’s Trusts in each district, which check that services responsible for protecting chil dren are working well. County Coun. Steen added: “What is most promising is that we’re hitting our targets to cut the numbers of young peo ple being killed or badly injured. “But we think even more could be • achieved if we learn lessons from other councils and'other countries to make .sure everyone in the county is working towards the same agenda.” ■
