Baugh are turning, for the third time in the history of RATS, to “Sleeping Beauty”. ■ Along with young choreographer, Laura
■
Frost, who also plays Jack IGpling, and mu sical director, Katie Famworth, this combi- ■ nation of young and experienced producers are working hard to maintain and enhance RATS’ reputation as slick panto perform ers. -
; The King and Queen are played by old P I 'M
hands Robin Simmons and Jane Flynn. Robin and'Jane were first cast together in ■ 1974 as boy and girl friend in the Lancashire Comedy “Beside Tlie Seaside”. : - -
■ The Princess, Sleeping Beauty herself, is played by Hannah Williams, who, like many of the younger cast, is still in her teens, but
- through young RATS productions and other- ' shows, is a very experienced young perform- ^ e r .
. - As already mentioned, Laura Frost plays
the young son of the Palace cook, Ma IG- pling, while the traditional Pantomime ' Dame will be played by Dave Procter. So of ten the fall guy or comedy baddy, Dave has been persuaded to don the wig and padded bra at last. And for Jack’s love interest, who else but •
Jill, played by, Isobel Austin, another young Rat.
No panto is complete without the good, and the bad and tussling with each other for
power this year are husband and wife team Dave and Anne Lang as Cuthbert and Lu- cretia. More comedy is supplied by Will Thomas
and Anna Davies as Beadle and Bungle, Harriet Jay as the unfortunate nurse and also Chris Smith as the Sergeant Aida Camp in charge of the Palace Guard. . A strong line up of young RATS as chorus
and fairies, guards and hobgoblins prom ise strong backup to the principals,-who are completed by the late arrival o f Prince Charming, portrayed by Harriet McCart ney., ■ ■''■■

REVIEW: “The Bacchae” at the Royal Exchange until December 4th. .

www.royalexchange.co.uk- ; '
SOME weeks ago I was standing in the magnificent Greek Theatre in Syracuse and pondered on the incredible infia- ence of Greek Drama on the whole his- tory'of western literature.
- 'Then I went to Manchester’s Royal
Exchange, a modern marvel of theatre construction, to see Braham_Murray’s production of Euripedes’ masterpiece, “The Bacchae”. The centuries vanish. The drama is as powerful today as it has' ever been, a searing exploration of the conflict of the emotional and rational; sides of the human psyche.

; angered that he is not being worshipped in a befitting way and determined to take his revenge, v . Jotham Annan is excellent in the role of
the somewhat petulant god. His portrayal i has vigour and a humour tinged with an edge of cruelty coupled with superb dic-
' tion. He is well supported by veterans, Co lin Proefer as Tiresias, Wyllie Longmore as Cadmus, Terence Wilton as the Soldier, and most of all by two very strong perform ances by Sam Alexander as Pentheus, the victim and Eve Polycarpou as Agave, the murderous mother.,, ' ..
. , . The traditional Chorus is given a new
interpretation with two speakers accom panied by a group of dancers. They give a
hypnotic feeling of the frenzied worship of Dionysus’ cult. As always congratulations to the design team. The bare stage is just like the original Greek Orchestra, the stage for ritual and competitive dramas. Think we have grown more civilised in
the last three millennia at your peril! What gods or fate or whatever, we are still at the mercy of our human weaknesses and we face terrible downfalls.' The Greeks, as always had a word for it,
hubris or in modern terms, pride comes before a fall. The Exchange’s Christmas production is Zack by famous Northern playwright Harold Brighouse.: .-
