16 Clitheroe Advertiser 8iTimes, Thursday, December 31st, 2009 Zoe has New Year wish

AS health trainer for the Kibble Valley, Zoe Pickard knows that New Year resolutions are easy to make and easy to break. But she’s determined

to offer people the chance to keep themselves fit and well over the coming months! Funded by NHS East

Lancashire, Zoe works hand-in-glove with part ner organisations, includ ing Kibble Valley Bor ough Council, in putting on an extensive pro gramme of activities for local residents. Over the past year, Zoe

and the council’s Health and Fitnes s Develop ment Officer, Tracy Balko, have put on a series of healthy living programmes that look to prevention of illness rather than cure. Already, hundreds of

local people have joined in an array of activities designed to keep them ' active in body and mind. Now, Zoe’s New Year

wish is for the partner ship to keep the momen tum going in taking the healthy choice opportu nities right round the Kibble Valley. It all fits in neatly with

the aims of NHS East Lancashire’s “Save A

by Dunca. Smith Q h a i i c e t o k e 6 p f i t a n d w e l l w i t h v a r i e d p r o g r a m m e

Million Years Of Life” campaign, which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of the area’s residents, with on-the- ground health promoters pla3ung a crucial role. Zoe, who is 27 and lives

in Clitherpe, is certainly enjoying her role as a Healthy Lifestyle Co ordinator, her post being funded by the area’s com munity health commis sioner, NHS East Lan cashire. Up to 60 people have

been turning up for the regular exercise sessions put on at The Grand, in York Street, Clitheroe -■ and similar numbers have been attending the Swing and Line Dancing and Easy Aerobics ses sions. Out of Clitheroe, Zoe

and partner organisa tions have taken “Come Dancing” lessons out to th e catchment area of Langho, Wilpshire, BLUington, Salesbury and Clayton-le-Dale. And a rolling programme has seen the partnership s ta r t to put on “open h ou se” multi-agency events at village centres throughout the Valley,

from Dowriham to Dun- sop Bridge, from Slaid- burn to Sabden, and from Waddington to Wiswell and WhaUey. Zoe said: “It’s been a

very productive and rewarding time over the pas t year and now we have a lot to look forward to. We have learned what is popular and what peo ple want - and th a t ’s what we aim to provide. “The New Year offers

people the chance to make a fresh start in looking after themselves and we can help people by offering facilities and activities locally.” In addition to the

danc^based exercise ses sions, Zoe has linked up with partners to put on activities aimed at young people, including a “Get Healthy Day” at Kib- blesdale High School, Techology COllege taster, sessions at Kibblesdale Children’s Centre, a “Bumps and Babies” ses sion, a “Street .Feet” dancing event, a “Pram- bles” pram and ramble ses sion and a summer school. That’s not to mention the “seated exer cise” classes at Read, a

Pamper Day and, “yoga for health” events target ed at pregnant women. All the activities are

done in tandem with the local council, the charity Oasis Community Health and the Lancast er Foundation, which runs the Grand. Zoe knows th e area

and its people well, hav ing been born and brought up in East Lan cashire. She gained a Sports Studies Diploma at Bmnley College before going on to take her hon ours degree in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Metropolitan University. She did her work expe

rience with Kibble Valley Council, working along side Tracy on the “Fit ness For Health” exercise referral programme. Now, their pro-active

work seems to be coming together for a Healthy New Year. Hopefully, with some degree of Res olution. Our picture shows Zoe

(right) and Tracy Balko, from Kibble Valley Bor ough Council, outside The Grand, where many of their healthy lifestyle events take place, (s)
