RIBBLE Valley Net- ball Club continued to go from strength to strength during 2009. Highlights from the first

half of the year were a very successful tour of Malta at Easter, followed by the hosting of their annual tournaments in June. And since returning to

training in September it has been a very; busy time. Four yeiars ago, the club

was awarded Gold Accred itation by England Net- ball - the only club in the north west to achieve this accolade. And the , .club has

retained the gold standard. This reco^ises the good

quality support that the clubs members received through a highly-trained workforce o f coaches, umpires, volunteers and

Netball

administration. To main tain the standard, the club has to be reviewed regular ly, and recently has again been found to be at gold standard. The club has continued

to grow, both with num bers of girls and people involved. Ladies from the Ribble

Valley are always welcome to come and try the sport, and, as part of an initiative by England Netball, the club has been running Back To It sessions since September. These have been very

popular, both with ladies who have not played the game before, and those that want to get back into it. : Recently the group have been having friendly

matches and started play ing in the local league. The club also had 12

girls selected for county training in September. At Under 14 level, suc

cessful girls were Millie Arnold, Katy Oliver, Emily Rogers, Charli Charnley and Franceseca Barrientos. At Under 16 level, Katy

Baldwin, Beth Walker- Smith, Emily Raweliffe, Emily Zak and Beth Tom linson were selected, and for the Under 19 squad, Zoe Austin and Sarah Cowgill got the nod. In November they reji-

resented their county in a tournarrient against other counties, and were part of successful Lancashire squads. Again in September, the

club hosted tours by squads from a Glaswegian

regional in September, and the Scottish 'Under 17 and Under 19 squads in December. The oiiginal contact was’

madewlien the club played Scottish squads out in Malta. On both occasions, the

opposition for the visitors was provided by club teams, as well as local teams. They were really appre

ciative of the opportunity to corhe and play different clubs of a good standard, and the club is hoping to make a reciprocal visit to Glasgpw in 2010. Meanwhile, RVNC

teams at Under 11s, 12s, 14s and 16s have been tak ing part in the Lancashire Cup League since Septem ber.

.

At Under 14s and Under 16s, the top two clubs

qualify for the regional round of the All England National Clubs Competi tion.

Ribble Valley Under 16s

narrowly missed out as they struggled with injuries, but the Under 14s were successful and go on to play the top teams from Greater Manchester, Cumbia and Cheshire in the new year. The club runs sessions

that aim to allow anyone to be part of the club and enjoy playing netball. They range from funda-

niental sporting activities for younger players, social netball for girls and adults,

. as well as competitive training. If anyone wishes to find

out ' more, go to: vrunu.rrmc.co.uk ’Alternatively, contact Sara (01200 424281).

Smith

eyeing a big2010

■ From Back Page

“case for them because they are struggling. “They’ve paid big money but they are

finding it tough in this division. “In the UniBond you can play the team

at the bottom of the league and get turned over because there is so much quality. “It’s a hard league and the key is to find

good consistency and prepare in the right way.” He added: “We have got Marine coming

up in the quarter-final of the Lancashire Cup and i t ’s a dream of mine to get Chtheroe to a final. “It would be a great achievement for

this club. “All players aim to try and win some

thing and that’s certainly the goal with the lads at this club. “It would be nice to reach a final and do

well in the league. “The lads work hard and they are a

great bunch so they deserve it. “It’s important that we stay as a unit

now and hopefully 2010 will be a great year for this club.”

Get umpiring

EAST Lancashire has a thriving culture of cricket, but none of its matches would be possible without umpires. Local leagues rely on qualified umpires,

so why not take up a new challenge in 2010 and train to be an umpire? A new cricket umpires training course

begins on Wednesday, January 6th, at the East Lancs Cricket Club, in Blackburn. It has been organised by the East Lan

cashire Association of Cricket Umpires and more information is available from the association secretary Allen Parker on 01200 442614.'
