www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, Thursday, December 31 st, 2009 11 Ambulance bosses ask partygoers to keep track on how much they drink
AMBULANCE bosses are pleading with the region’s par- ty g o ^ to stop and think about drink this New Year.
With many people attending
office parties, house parties and meeting up with friends at the
pub, officials at the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust are saying: “ It is a really impor tant time to keep track of how much you’re drinking”. The Department of Health advises that women should
Have your say on the new skm service
’ by Duncan Smith A NEW community-based skin treat-
.ment ser-vice is being developed by the area’s health commissioner, NHS East Lancashire. The aim is to develop a new service for
people in Ribble Valley and neighbouring boroughs that improves the patient expe rience closer to where they live, without the need of having to go to a main hospi tal site. This would also take the strain off hos
pital services and free up dermatology consultants and staff to concentrate on the more urgent or demanding condi tions. The community initiative is being mas
terminded by health professionals at NHS East Lancashire, who are looking at the feasibility of setting up more locally- accessible treatment and assessment for patients-.-who live in Ribble Valley, Bum- ley,
Pendle and Rossendale. ; 'They have found that high number of
patients vvHo need to see a doctor for rou- ’ tine skin problems could be treated -with out-visiting hospital. Approximately .40% of patients cur
rently seen at hospit^ for a routine skin condition could safely be seen at a com munity health facility rather than travel ling to a hospital site. At present, treatment in the communi
ty is available at Clitheroe Health Cen tre, St Peter’s Centre in Burnley, and at Accrington Pals Health Centre, in Hynd- bum. Now NHS East Lancashire wants the
public to inform its decision-making process in setting up a new community- based service. It wants to know:
• Where would you like to see the serv ice located? • What would be the best opening times (e.g. weekdays 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.?) • How quickly would you expect to be seen for a routine skin problem? Is four weeks an acceptable length of time to wait? • Where would you prefer to -visit to be
. seen for a routine skin condition? • What choices for patients would you want from the new service (e.g. choice of location, date and time of appointment?) • What would you want to know about the new service when deciding whether to use it? The new proposals will build in and
reflect as many patient and public -views as possible - the engagement period ends on January 15th, 2010. Views can be sent by e-mail to:

drink no more than two to three units of alcohol per day and men should drink no more than three to four units per day. A unit is equal to lOml. of pure alcohol. NWAS Director of Emer
gency Services, Mr Derek Cartwright said: “We are not trying to put a dampener on the festive season. We are simply asking that partygoers take a sensible and moderate approach in order to reduce the risk of
becoming another ‘statistic’. “This is the busiest time of
the year for the ambulance serv ice -without the added pressure of alcohol related calls, many of which can be avoided. “ In genuine life-threatening
emergencies, time matters. If people stop and think about drink and take a sensible approach, they can play their part in ensuring ambulance crews are free to attend-vulnera ble and very poorly peopla”
