A NEW decade could spell the start of a new era for Clitheroe Football Club as manager Peter Smith looks to. add some silverware to the Shaw- bridge trophy cabinet. . As the halfway stage of

the 2009/10 season hears, the Blues find themselves in seventh position in the Uni- Bond First Division North table; just eight points off the dreamland of the play- offs. The Ribble Valley side

also face the prospect of a Lancashire Cup final berth. But Smith is refusing to

get carried away just yet as he knows there is still a long way to go. . He said: “We have got.

some great games comingi up. We are only half .way^: into the season though so we have got pother half to ‘ play.- “We want to stay in that top half of the table, keep:

fans at the moment, but there’s no point in us having a good first half to the sea son if we were to have a bad second half. “We started off drawing

■ too many, but obviously the team has gelled since then and now we are in a good position. “The lads are enjoying

their football and I just hope we can carry on because I feel we can mktch any team in that league.” Smith added: “Early on

we drew a few and lost a few when we didn’t really deserve it, but we kept at it because we knew it was going to come for us.. . ‘The aim at the start of

the season was to beat 12th position and build a good side for next year, but we’re

in a position now where we ' can start, getting a, bit

plugging away and keep .. greedier and have a bit ^-picking up results.

* more ambition.” - But the inclement winter weather has disrupted the club’s progress of late after fixtures against bottom side Harrogate Railway Athlet-. ic and lea^e leaders Lan- caster City were postponed. Now Smith hopes his

ever-improving side can maintain their playoff push. He added: “The lads are

frustrated because they want to play. “They don’t want to lose

momentum because we are in a very good vein of form and' want to keep that going.

“Nobody played on Box

ing Day so we didn’t lose any ground on the teams • above, but it’s just over two weeks since we last played and the lads 'want to grt out there.

“It also m e ^ that play

er suspensions are being dragged out. “That sometimes leaves

you a bit short and you have to reshuffle but we have the personnel to cover. “The game against Har

rogate was called off and I think we could have got a result there and continued our push for the top six. ‘"The game against Lan

caster was also called off and that would have been a great game for us because they are top of the league and we -wanted to show that we are capable of matching anybody. “We were gutted it was

•off. At the end of the day you’ve just got to keep training hard and ticking over.” • Clitheroe will kick-start

2010 -with a journey to face AFC Fylde on New Year’s Day, before facing a Lan- cashife Cup quarter-final

game away at Premier Divi sion outfit Marine the fol lowing Friday. “We just want to get a

result against AFC Fylde on New Year’s Day,” Smith said.

“They are a team who

have been able to spend big money in the hope of get ting promotion back to the Unibond Premier Division. “But that hasn’t been the H Turn to page 31
