took part in a “box war” to celebrate the end of a packed programme of Scouting activities.

.County Council is successfully helping people into employment. Latest figures show national unem
ployment rising fast, with 1.56 million people out of work and claiming unemployment benefits across the UK.
; But in the area covered by Lan cashire County Council, the jobless total actually fell last month. '.The latest figures show that in June,
24,623 people in the LCC area claimed unemployment benefits - a fall of 916 compared to the figure for May.
- The, county council's Human Resources (HR) team, in partnership with other organisations such as Job- centre Plus and Lancashire Adult Learning, is running a number of schemes to help young people find work and to get unemployed people back into work. They include: • WorkStart- an award-winning
scheme aimed at people who have been claiming Income Support as a lone parent, or Employment and Support aUowance (previously incapacity ben efit) for six months or longer. Work- Start gives people the opportunity to get work experience by offering them a 30-day work placement with the coun ty
couhcil.to improve their skills and boost their confidence.

PLANS to transform a “tired” Valley play area have been given the backing of councillors. Tower Hill Youth Action Group is
proposing to develop the Salthill play area. A report to the borough's Com munity Committee said d etai led
designs for a plan which would be implemented in two phases, had been drawn up. by the county's environ mental project team and a grant of £47,000 from the county's Playbuild ing Fund had been approved in prin ciple.
Committee members agreed th a t
the f i r s t phase of th e scheme he implemented and offered in-kind sup
port in managing the project. They also agreed to a £1,500 grant
as suggested by the Ribble Valley Lancashire Local Committee.
