afoot for parking

A LONG-running saga for the introduction of a resi dents’ parking scheme in Clitheroe looks set to be moving forward. After more than four years

of discu s s io n s w i th L an cashire County Council, local businesses and residents have joined forces and reached a compromise to create a park ing solution covering Church Brow, Church Stre et, York Street and Albion Street. Currently this zone is large

ly served by two-hour limited waiting spaces so people who live there have to move their cars every two hours. Previously, trad e rs have

them from two-hour limited w a itin g in c e r ta in p a rk in g ' bays th a t are located away from shops, in purely residen tial areas of the zone. However, these bays wouid

not be reserved tor the exclu sive use of re s id e n ts and would remain available for two-hour parking by every body else. I t was also suggest-

been concerned a b o u t th e gradual loss of on-street park ing in central Clitheroe and the lack of dedicated loading facilities in York Street and Church Street. This need has _ been h e ightened since th e opening of The Grand in York Street. At a recent meeting of the

Ribble 'Valley L an c a sh ire Local, a scheme th a t would; incorporate 91 parking bays was suggested. I t was r e v e a le d , th a t a

reduction in the number of parking permits from 128 to 64 on the basis of a maximum of two permits per property had been made. The move would allow resi

dents who live in the zone to be entitled to purchase per m its, which would exempt

' ed th at parking be allowed on both sides of York Street. The move would enable dedicated loading facilities to be provid ed elsewhere in York Street and Church Street. I t is also understood th a t five disabled parking spaces will be provid ed, two on York S tre e t and th iw on Church Street, rather than the current four spaces on York Street only. - After a lively debate, dur ing which many residents and

- traders spoke, the scheme has been forwarded to the county council for public consulta tion. I t is understood th at the cost of implementing the ini tiative will be recouped from the sale of parking permits. After the meeting, Mr Alis

tair Forbes, a resident of York Street, said: “The scheme is designed to benefit all users of these streets: the residents who live there, the businesses who trade there and visitors to Clitheroe who should bene f it from the increased num bers of parking spaces.” More details will follow in

the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times.

Nature treat in river walk

A RIVERSIDE walk in the u p p e r v a lle y of th e River Wharfe began a t Yockenth- waite for 20 members of the Clitheroe Naturalists Society.

:. The walk started along the ro ad a t D e ep d a le Bridge, where th e Dales 'Way foot p a th begins, alongside th e river. While walking along this

path, small clusters of barns were seen which traditionally stored hay from th e flower- rich meadows and provided shelter for farm animals. : ■ The path followed the river, which was swollen due to hea'vy rain tiie pre'vious day, giving rise to some spectacu-. lar waterfalls. ■ After walking for some two

miles the river was crossed by a footbridge into the hamlet of Beckermonds. From here the walk continued towards the hamlet of Deepdale, pass ing through National Trust land VYith meadows abundant with wild flowers. V Alongside this p a th a small

Bronze Age stone circle was seen, da tin g b a ck to 2,000

; B.C. and, further on, a more : recent lime kiln, which was used in the 18th and 19 th cen turies. The walk of five miles ended a t th e a rch ed stone? bridge a t Yockenthwaite.; . During the walk, 63 wild ,

flowers were seen, including. red bartsia, lousewort, scurvy grass, fragrant orchid, scabi- ous and harebells.
