HEALTH chiefs were deter mined that much-needed exten sion work on a rural surgery in the Kibble Valley wouldn’t drive them batty! When they decided to modernise
Slaidburn Health Centre, in the heart of the Forest of Bowland, they realised tha t a colony of bats spent their summer roost in the roof space. Not wanting to upset the bats - or their sex life! -
they consulted a
local ecology expert and then worked out their building opera tions to avoid disrupting the bats’ breeding season. Construction work started last
February, with the outside work scheduled to finish well before the bats got round to their summer time get-together in the surgery roof. The building work was com pleted on time, the bats got on with raising th e ir young in the summer months, and now the extension and interior refurbish ment work has been finalised to give Hodder Valley residents a re vamped surgery to be proud of. “Everyone, including the bats, seems very happy with the out-
' come,” said environmental consult ant David Fisher, who was called in for official guidance and advice by local community health provider NHS East Lancashire. . David, who runs his company
, Earthworks Environmental Design from the Poprsland Bam in Slaidbum, was delighted that NHS East Lancashire showed proper concern for the protection of local' wildlife when the £200,000-worth of work was ordered to improve the surgery premises. He said: “They called me in and
when I checked out the roof space, I found evidence that two species of bats - the Pipistrelle and the Common Long-Eared bat - were using the building to roost in dur ing the breeding months of May, June and July. They want it warm and imdisturbed so we advised that building work was done earlier than that, so as not to disrupt the - bats. “The contractors were excellent.
Not only d id they follow th e advice, they were fascinated and concerned with the bats and want ed to help as much as possible. The Estates people from NHS Eas t Lancashire agreed to all my sug gestions and we were able to look after the interests of both patients and the bats.- “I monitored the situation and
I ’ve since checked out the roof space and cavities and the bats have been fine. Now, they’re leav ing to hibernate in nearby wood land and caves for the winter, so we’re all happy.” The Slaidbum work included the
construction of two single-storey extensions a t each end of the sur gery building to provide additional space for patients using the treat
ment room, as well as for the recepr tion office staff. In addition, work has been carried out internally to improve the dispensary, the con sulting room and the treatment room, along with improvements to the waiting and reception areas. The heating and hot water boilers were renewed with a more energy- efficient system. A spokesman for NHS East Lan
cashire Estates Directorate said: “There’s no way we were going to let the problem drive us batty. We just went about it practically
and found a solution that gave the residents in this part of the Forest of Bowland the facilities they
deserve, while giving the bats the best chance of doing what comes naturally during the summer months. “We know how important Slaid
bum Country Practice is to people in the local community, and in the surrounding farms and hamlets, and we know how much its staff is appreciated.” Oiir pictoe shows the Slaidbum

Docs and nurses get swine flu jab
FRONT-line priority, staff throughout East Lancashire’s hospitals are protect
ing themselves, and th e ir patients against swine flu. Medicial Directors Mrs Rineke Schram
and Dr Geraint Jones led the way by having the swine flu vaccine, and occupa tional health nurses are now visiting pri ority departments to boost staff’s immu nity. Both of the medical directors also run
clinics which deal directly with patients, and were some of the first of the hospi tals’ front-line staff to have the vaccine. Mrs Schram urged everyone recom
mended for vaccination to take up the offer, saying: “This vaccine has been rig orously tested and is confirmed as being safe. As winter approaches, our hospitals will get busier and we need our staff to be f it and healthy - especially with the increased threat of swine flu. “I t is vital we offer'our patients conti
nuity of semce so our staff need to be as protMted as possible.” Dr Jones added: “We readily accept
the seasonal flu vaccine is safe and many members of our staff have had the jab. The swine flu vaccine is no different - it offers the same protection against the particularly virulent H lN l strain. “I t is important oiir staff get vaccinat
ed against swine flu as chances are, they will come into contact with it over the coming months. “I t also offers benefits should their
families or friends get sick - the boosted immunity th a t the swine flu vaccine offers means you can help people at home recuperate without the worry of getting iU also.”
