IcLITHEROE’S Michael Bisping is lo u t to bounce back a f te r his f irst

JC loss a t middleweight. The cagefighter, nicknamed “The

Icount”, has blazed a trail over in Ameri- jea in Mixed Martial Arts, but back in ■July, he suffered a rare knockout against luSA Olympian and former champion |Dan Henderson. On Saturday, the 30-year-old is out to

Ifurther improve his superb 18-2 record at luFC 105 at the MEN Arena in Man- I Chester against Denis Kang. He is honest in his appraisal of his set-

Iback against Henderson in Las Vegas, land said: “To be honest I don’t have any

lexcuses. “I got hit with a good shot and I got

I knocked out. “I thought I was doing pretty well in I the fight. I lost the first round. I was win-

I ning the second up until I got caught, land if I didn’t get caught I could have

I gone on to win that fight. I “It’s not like I was getting completely I manhandled and destroyed and being Ipunked. But I did get caught and

1 knocked out.” Bisping intends to get back on track on

I Saturday: “Mentally for this fight, I’ve

I got to come out there and push the pace. “My best performances in the past

1 have been when I’ve come out and been 1 the aggressor. “So I’ve got to go back to that and

I back to my old self, if you wiU. “If you’ve seen my old fights, I ’ve

come out there and I ’ve just gone straight through ^ y s , finishing most of i them in the first round.

JUNIOR SOCCER: Clitheroe Wolves Under-9s lost in a thriller, 1-0 against Fulledge Colts. The first half

saw George - Bland, Sam Pickles and Leighton Clark son all go close. After the

break Colts hit - the post before Pickles, Harry Jackson, man- of-the-match Joe Wilson and ^ Matthew King were all some-, v how kept out for Wolves.

Cage fighting “My first 10 professional fights, I only

went past the first round once, so that’s what I ’ve got to go back to - I’ve got to find that fire inside me and just get that ruthless killer instinct back. “I’ve been itching to get back in there

and get back to my winning ways. “You’re only as good as your last fight

and unfortunately in my last fight I got knocked out. So that’s part of the reason why I ’ve been so keen to fight again and put that behind me.” But he expects a test against Kang,

adding: “I don’t want to go back down to fighting guys who are on their way up; I want to fight guys who are at the top of their game, and Denis Kang is one of those fighters. “He’s been around for a long time, he’s very experienced, and he’s fought some

great guys. “But I feel I match up well with him.

He’s made some comments that he’s def initely better than me, but that’s what makes it a fight. “I tend to disagree with him, so we’ll

see what happens on the night.” And he is delighted to be fighting on

home soil in front of his own supporters: “Wherever I fight, I ultimately get in there and fight by myself, but being in Manchester and having the crowd behind me is going to be beneficial. “In the past when I fought in England,

the carowd really does get behind me and I feel it’s always had a positive impact. I t’s gonna spur me on.”

MEDAL: Jon Schofleld Scho gets

a bronze Canoeing

SAWLEY canoeist Jon Schofield won bronze as Great Britain enjoyed a record-breaking Wild Water World Cup Series on the challenging courses in Tas mania. As reported last week, the

Clitheroe Advertiser &'nmes, Thursday, November 12th, 2009 45

former Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil, now studying a t Loughborou^, was part of an impressive team effort, and was fifth in the Men’s K1 with one race remaining on Saturday. He won bronze in the first

MKl sprint race, and ended 14th in the second. He was back in the top 10

with an eighth-place finish in race three, then claimed silver in the Bradys sprint - a ferociously steep down river course that Schofield specialises in, where he was only beaten by Nejc Znidar- cic, this year's European Cup winner. Schofield was then ninth

in Monday’s fifth race, the Ouse Classic, leaving him fifth overall. On Saturday, he earned

another silver medal, only 0.38sec,-off gold, which earned him an overall rank ing of third. Great Britain have had a

great year a t the WWR World Cup, with Jessica Oughton winning the event overall for WKl with one race to spare. In to ta l, GB won 19

medals, which is a team record.

Clitheroe take positives despite another defeat

Clitheroe R V F C .............0 Vale o f L u n e .................... f INJURIES and absentees continue to hammer Clitheroe, but the locals pan take some positives in

defeat. The pack resembled a

typical selection — the back line had a very youthful look to it, with bundles of pace among the centres anti back three.

. Unfortunately, weather and pitch conditions meant it was a day for flip- pers and snorkel rather than boots and a gum

shield. A close quarter war of

R u g b y u n io n

a ttr ition rather than expansive running rugby ensued, on a pitch which was barely playable at the s ta r t and deteriorated throughout the game. The only score came in

the first few minutes of the first half with a 'Vale of Lune try which was con verted for the hosts to t^ e a 7-0 lead, while the Maroon and Golds were still napping having suf fered a nightmare journey to the Powderhouse Lane ground on the outskirts of Lancaster.

Vale play an aggressive :

tight game, which at t im ^ , was on the edge of what, the referee found accept able, and his patience finally tested too far and a Vale forward was sin binned for 10 minutes. In the conditions, it was

unsurprising that is where the scoreline stayed in the first half (iespite the best efforts of the forwards and the half hack pairing of Smith and Railton - the la tte r having manfully stepped into the breach at the last minute from his usual position of outside centre.

At the change round, the pitch had deteriorated

; further withlare^stand- :ihg in intdies'pf‘

water, and there .waS'little-. chance

^either ride ruhnihg away with points. Captain Oliver McEn-

tyre elected to keep the ball tight and play the game close to the break down, but this was frus trated by Vale cannily playing the referee very well, and after increasing numbers of penalties for handling in the ruck, pun ished with no greater sanc tion than the kick to Clitheroe, tempers flared

and Clitheroe prop Carins found himself cooling down xmder the posts for 10 minute following a yel low card. Some great running

from Joe Basquill, Oily Greenwood, James Dick inson and Martin O’Con nor in the backline, when they did eventually see the ball, could not find a way

' through the Vale defence, and the forwards pil^ into attack without reward for all their efforts. With Vale never giving

up their attempts to extend their lead, the Maroon and Gold defence

held very firm, and while they ventured into the Clitheroe 22 area there was only one occasion they got close to the line, an a tta ck which was snubbed out by wingman Ernest Thomas, combin ing with the forwards. The game inevitably

splashed and sloshed its way to the final whistle, and while Vale were pleased with their win, Clitheroe can take many positives from the game as the look forward to enter taining Upper Eden at Littlemoor on Saturday afternoon.
