Skipper returns for tough trip

HuUon ; . . . i ----------................ .............................. 46

Clilheroe RUFC: . . . . . . . . ; . . . . . . . . ------- . .0 SKIPPER Ben Graves returned to lead his men against a side.who have only lost once this season, and ■ are notoriously mean when it comes to conceding

points. ■ With Hutton having a lofty reputation and some impressive performances already in the bag this sea son, it has to be said the team took to the pitch with a certain amount of trepidation. The opening exchanges were all Hutton, and they

drove the ball in time and time again in an attempt to soften the Clitheroe pack and break their will to com pete. ' After 20 minutes and two Hutton scores, Clitheroe began to get into gear and get right under the skins of the hosts. Some good open play by the forwards and running

by the centres saw them move up the pitch, and they began to put some practice ground moves into action. Clitheroe had their attacks repeatedly snuffed out

when entering their opponents’ 22 . However, it was a good period of pressure from Clitheroe and ensured Hutton didn’t think they were on a cake walk to -vic-

■tory.;,-,,,' : Another converted try from Hutton’s dazzling out

side centre put the score to 19-0. ; At a ruck some of the Hutton forwards lost their heads and the melee that ensued continued as play progressed. With several of the Hutton team joining in, the ref

eree had no choice but to stop play. He then brought out his carfs and sent one of the

Hutton forwards to the bin - which was lucky as it could easily have been a straight red. Then, in a move that baffled the Clitheroe support

ers on the touchline, the referee decided to even the teams up by sending scrum-half Smith to cool down for 10 minutes. The second half started much as the first with' the

Maroon and Golds taking time to find their stride. After pressure in the Clitheroe half, a rash error of

judgement with a quick line-out left one Clitheroe player with a very red face, as the throw was gathered by the Hutton scrum-half, who took one step and crossed the line. The conversion ended the game as a points contest, but pride was still to play for. And this the town team did with a vengeance, as

while Hutton continued to score through their silky back line, the whole Clitheroe team rallied. With the clock ticking down, it was again the

Maroon and Golds who ended the half in the ascen dancy, but the Hutton defence held firm and the score they so deserved eluded them. . ’ , Hutton play some great flowing rugby through the

back line, and defensively are strong, which should stand them in good stead next season in the higher division, but Clitheroe are looking forward to the returnfbeture. r-: Loslock .

. . . . .............. .. .57

Clilheroe Cavaliers . . . . .........................................3 THE Cavaliers won the reverse fixture by the nar rowest of margins, and knew this would be a tough encounter. . ^ : With a large number of regulars unavailable, the

depleted back line was filled with a-number of former Colts. - To their huge credit, they did themselves and club proud with relentless tackling and work effort.

.: The game itself started brightly for Clitheroe, with the pack making the hard yards up the field. Lostock were happy to mix it up as demonstrated in the early encounters. T ^ -‘r-:. ■-

....... ; At an early ruck the Lostock prop took exception

to the Cavaliers captain’s powerful rucking and trans gressed in front of the refere<;. A penalty was awarded, and Keough cooly stepped

up and slotted the three points. ' ; ■ This spurred the home team, who from that point

dominated the game, scoring 57 unanswered points. These points were scored through their powerful

back line, and a t times it was painful for any onlook ers as they saw men against boys.- ; However, Clitheroe’s young charges tried their

hardest, and the afternoon was typified with Sam Thornbers'undaunted . first senior p e r fo rm a n c e . : ‘ >.

: : On Saturday the Cavaliers travel to Blackpool to play against a team who they put 98 points past earli er in the season. ‘ / The Cavaliers will have to be on top form as the home team will be seeking their revenge!

THE cricket season got underway early for Clitheroe Cobras coaches with a batting mat demon s tra tio n delivered by North of England coach Dave Cooper. The Cobras coaches

were shown a variety of batting, bowling and field ing drills using the innova tive m a t which Cooper designed, following his interest in the sport as a player and then coach.. (iobras . Chairman

Farouk Hussain said: “Dave has shown so many innovative uses for the bat ting mat.

“ I t really is a must for

all clubs. I t makes the coaching of strokes to young cricketers so much easier and surely will increase their skill level dramatically. “What's more it can also

be used for fielding and bowling development, as we witnessed at first hand. “ I t really is a great

resource and makes cricket a fun activity for any num ber of children .It is some thing that we will be using with far greater regularity and purpose." Cooper is available to run similar sessions for any
