Measles outbreak ‘heading our way’

EAST Lancashire is in danger of seeing a major outbreak of • measles if more youngsters do ■ not get vaccinated, a leading

local health chief has warned; The area covering Burnley, Pen-

dle, Rossendale and the Ribble Val ley is nearly 10 per cent below the target needed to prevent an ou t break from taking hold. • And unless more parents come for-

ward to have their children inoculat ed, local communities will be left - without 'herd immunity,' which stops the disease from spreading. "The aim of NHS East Lancashire

. ■ DR ELLIS FRIEDMAN

and local GPs is to have 95 per cent of the targeted population innocu- • lated with the MMR vaccine. This would provide an effective

level of protection from measles, mumps and rubella, according to the primary care trust's Public Health

Director Dr Ellis Friedman. Now, after two major outbreaks in

the North West, local health profes sionals have launched a campaign to raise public awareness a n d ' to encourage parents to bring their children for vaccination. Dr Friedman said: "Immunisation

rates have gone down and yet we have measles outbreaks on our

■ doorstep, just 50 miles or so away in Blackpool and in Cheshire; Unless - the numbers gaining protection is

. increased, we are vulnerable to an ' outbreak occurring in our area of- East Lancashire. It could well be • heading our way. - .. "That's why we are increasing our

number of vaccination sessions, while increasing people's awareness about just what is at stake. Parents ' need to bring their children forward to get the protection needed." ’■

v Dr Friedman said that one of the

problems encountered was th a t some people took fright after claims that, there was a risk attached to MMRvaccination. J

- -"But th a t alleged risk has now

been conclusively disproved. There is a world-wide consensus that the vaccine is safe and effective. Parents can feel re-assured that it is best for their children to have it done." He said: "If a child gets measles, it

can be serious. The disease can easi ly spread to brothers and sisters in • the same family and on to friends and neighbours. Children can't.be vaccinated until they are just over a year old and that leaves them par- . ticularly vulnerable to catch the infection from .an unprotected older, brother or sister."; The North west has the highest number of measles cases in the coun

try, with more cases confirmed dur ing the last three months than any where else in England and Wales. Dr Friedman added: "Major out

breaks have occurred recently in Cheshire and, earlier in the year, another outbreak occurred in the Blackpool area.

. ; ; That is not far away and i t con

cerns me. These outbreaks can hap pen in any community where there are large numbers of unvaccinated children and young adults. . Anyone up to the age of 18 is enti

tled to MMR vaccination on the NHS. Children need two doses for maximum cover, the f irs t a t 13 months and then a pre-school boost er usually around the age of-3 years and four months. ' • For information, contact your
