: in the open spaces in their homes: the flowers they grew to decorate the house hold shrine, roses,

WITH fingers as green as their uniforms, young gardeners at Oakhill Col lege have won well- deserved praise from the Royal Horticultural Soci ety. ■ As well as staging such
prestigious events a t the Chelsea Flower Show, the RHS knows' that interest in gardening grows from the grass roots. That is why it is keen to encour age young gardeners through the “RHS Cam paign for School Garden ing”, which aims to sup port schools in-developing and actively using a school garden.
As p a r t of. the cam
paign, th e Gardening Club at the 'Whalley col lege has received official confirmation that i t has completed Level One in the RHS Benchmark Scheme. This involves planning gardening activ ities inside and outside the classroom and provid-, ing evidence that pupils are actively participating. The greenest of young
fingers a t th e college belong to 11-year-old pupils Sarah Bryan, from Langho, Anna Shaw, from Barrow, and Sophie How- • ell, from Whalley, who have worked really hard
to make this happen. The Gardening Club is now s tarting to plant sugar snap peas and mange tout as p a r t of a 2009 RHS ■Trial to monitor any. pests or diseases observed and record which variety grows the biggest. But
■ perhaps the main chal lenge will be discovering whichvariety the pupils (and maybe some lucky teachers) prefer on their dinner plates from the home-grown greens. Our picture shows,
from th e left, Sarah, Anna and Sophie with their certificate from the RHS. (s)
