STARS of films and television have often visited the beautiful and picturesque vil lage of Downham, and licensees of the Assheton Arms, David and Wendy Busby have met many of them during the 25 years they have been running this charm ing and rustic free house. ■ ■ ■ The film "Whistle Down the Wind" was

filmed in the surrounding area and the popular TV drama series "Born and Bred" transformed the village with its fake shop, fronts and the pretend war memorial out

side the pub. , During the 25 years the couple have

seen many changes from when the pub was the hub of the community and people called in for a beer every night of the

week. (“Now things are very different,’’ said

David.-“The emphasis is more on food and lunchtimes are the busiest period

• when walkers and tourists tend to pop in for a bite to eat. Early evening trade is also good as many regular customers come to dine. We specialise in seafood ^

-well as other locally sourced ingredients for our traditional dishes, which are popu lar both with locals and visitors, he

added. ■.

-.

. ’.. . .

...... “Tourists from all over the country

came to Downham to see where ‘Born and Bred’ was filmed and we were disap pointed when the series finished. Visitors. from further afield still come, however, as the series is still being shown in other countries," David said. ' , As for the future, they have no plans to

change their recipe for, success and will continue to provide the best of food and service to all their customers.

: : , . Running a business and looking after a

family has made for a busy life for the cou- pie, perhaps this is why their two cliildren have not followed in their parent's foot steps. They live quite close, however, daughter Cass Preston is a hairdresser in Whalley and son Andrew is in education: in Manchester. They also have two grandT' children, Lucie and Sophie, who.attend. Barrow school.

:: ■.: A celebration to mark the 25th anniver-, sary was attended by more than 250 fam-: ily, friends, suppliers and customers old and new who enjoyed a glass of bubbly and canapes to mark this wonderful achievement:
