O'CALLAGHAN A Wharfedale walk BROWN-
HOPES were high as mem bers of Clitheroe Naturalists' Society drove up Wharfedale in bright sunshine towards: Buckden, their starting point of the day. A steep climb up Buckden
Rake brought them to the high point from which they had to descend a stony path
'to cross the stepping stones to the hamlet of Cray. . A strong wind developed so
they took advantage of some farm buildings for shelter to have lunch. Soon after Cray they came upon a small natu ral garden complete with stream, where a long stop was taken to observe, identify and record the many species of flowers, dominated by large patches of marsh marigolds found there.
- ' From time to time the sky
cleared and the magnificence of the -views across the valley and down Wharfedale could
be appreciated, but not for long. As they traversed the plateau kno-wn as Langstroth- dale Chase on the classic walks of the Yorkshire Dales, the rain held off, but when they reached Scar House, it was deemed prudent to descened to the river bank to join the Dales Way path into
. Hubberholme. A short stop on the bridge
gave an opportunity for some bird watching, after which, in inceasingTain they had to return along the banks of the Wharfe to Buckden for tea. Pied flycatcher, swifts,
swallows, goldfinch and yel low wagtail were among a total of 20 species of birds seen on the walk and 38 differ ent flowers were noted. - . ■ Murial Carruthers thanked Pat Parrott for leading the walk. The next walk is to Gargrave. To book, call 01200 4 2 8 1 1 7 . .........
