A HUGE amount of interest was shown in the departure of the “H” company of Territorials by the residents of Clitheroe. They lined the streets to watch the 80- strong group of men parade at 8 a.m. before catching a train to Salisbury Plain. • At the Manchester Consistory

Court, Chancellor P. Vernon Smith granted Whalley Parish Church a facul ty for alterations at the church and for a new pulpit at Clitheroe Parish Church. • The heavy rains were delighting the

hearts of anglers who whipped the Rib- ble and Hodder. The floods had cleared the streams of smelts, but owing to the thundery showers, the baskets were light, ranging from three to six trout.

Looking Back 50 YEARSAGO

IT was just another patrol on a warm night for 20-year-old Clitheroe proba tionary policeman Gordon Schofield as he made his way round the quiet streets. It was just after 11 p.m. when the dark outline of Castle Castings Ltd., loomed up ahead. The foundry seemed in dark ness, but suddenly his attention was caught by the flashing of a light and a noise. He did not dash in, instead P.C. Schofield went for help, contacting P.C. Gordpn Ormshaw, who was 24. Together, they crept into the building and caught a gang of safe-breakers red handed. • The girls of Clitheroe Grammar

School presented their annual concert in ■ their new school hall to a large and appreciative audience.

PENSIONERS in Clitheroe lost their battle to have lifted the lOp per hour charge for using Clitheroe Castle bowl ing green. Coun. Bill Fleming said the charge was not just imposed for finan cial reasons. '

He explained that when pensioners

were allowed on for free, certain ele ments “hogged’’ the greens. • Members of the public. Kibble Val

ley councillors decided, should no longer be able to walk through the camping and caravan site at Edisford. The coun cil’s recreation and leisure committee was told th a t the site was classed as a recreation area as opposed to a public space and therefore walkers had no right of access. .

■y • ■ AST week the Kibble Valley’s Plan- T ^niiig and Development Committee,

Richard Sherras, refused our National Health Service planning permission to knock down the old hospital building in

. Chatburn Road and provide 52 much •needed houses in its place. : ■ Coun. Sherras and his colleagues took

this decision having received the advice of the Secretary of State for the Envi ronment and the experts of English Heritage that the building they wanted to “preserve” had been inspected in detail and found to be of no significant architectural or historical interest wor thy of protection. As a matter of fact, the professional planning officers of our borough council had given precisely the sameadvice.

• ■ ■ • So the likeliest outcome is that the

•NHS will appeal against the planning committee’s perverse decision and, a year or two and a lot of money down the line, the NHS will get its planning per- ■ mission and we will get the much needed

: new homes a t Chatburn Road. In th e meantime, the people of

. Clitheroe will suffer in three ways. Our Primary Care Trust will have been deprived of a considerable sum of

money which it would have applied to the relief of pain and suffering. The sick and vulnerable will simply have to wait for a Planning Inspector to correct .the planning committee’s error. The second consequence is that local

households, who were to have been pro vided with “affordable” homes on the site, will have had to move out of their native district and away-from their wider families in order to get a roof over their heads. And the third consequence is th a t

dozens of Clitheronians in the construc tion industry, who are currently idle because of the credit crunch, will remain idle and will pass this Christmas and the Christmas after next in shortage, instead of in plenty. On the other hand, Coun. Sherras and his colleagues will have drawn their

expenses and allowances as members of ’ the borough council and received the plaudits of those “conservationists”

•who apparently prefer the preservation' of an ugly and inconsequential set of old buildings to the healing of the sick, the'

■housing of the poor and the provision of . jobs to the unemployed. No dou b t th ey will feel proud of

themselves. Today is polling day in the Lancashire

County Council elections and itis expected, on all sides, that control will pass from the Labour Party to the Con servatives. If we, in Clitheroe, elect a Conserva

tive county councillor, which I still hope we will, we can expect the county to s ta rt spending money in Clitheroe on new schools, old people’s day centres and other, much needed facilities. I t is for that reason that I will be vot

ing Conservative. That, however, can only be the first

step. We will also need to encourage our borough councillors to start working for the prosperity of our town or, if they cannot bring themselves to that extrem ity, a t least to stand out of the way of their officials, and allow them to do it. ; c-mail: thccon(rariun(gltolmail.co.uk
