A bridge too late hits charity night

by Julie Magee

A CHATBURN pub landlord has been forced to cancel a charity bash following the delay of works to a nearby bridge. Mr Jeffrey Smith, manager of

The Pendle Hotel, was all set for Crow Trees Brow to be closed to traffic from 6 p.m. last Saturday to 10 a.m. on Sunday while a tempo rary bridge was lifted into position. : ■'The structure is necessary in order to carry out essential recon struction work on the 130-year-old bridge, the condition of which is

.^deteriorating rapidly, later in the year. _

- _ ' . -

- ’;Mr Smith explained everyone in- dhe village had prepared for the;

opposite his pub that the work had been rescheduled for this Saturday

. - the same evening as his planned charity night. Now Mr Smith has been forced

to display posters around the vil lage informing residents that the

• charity event will be cancelled. “There’s going to be a lot of dis-

:;; appointed people,” he said.“ It was / supposed to be a real fun event to raise funds for Chatburn Sports

' Field; but people aren’t gping to - bother, following the diversions to - com'i;to the event. We’re going to be virtually cut off from Chatburn

; - when the road is closed and people •i.willhave to use the A59 to get here. ‘I ’ye lost -two nights’:;trading through this.”

(closure'-T.everi'thelocal buses.had . adopted a different route he said.'- : “We organised a ‘Chatburn’s, Got-Talent! competition for. the following Saturday, b^ed on th is . timetable,’.’

- he added. ‘‘But we realised: soinething must be wrong

; when they, didn’t close the road.” ; .i-i^He only found out there had ;been a change of plan on Saturday, afternoon.; Mr Smith later discov-, ered after, reading a'poster tha t had been'erect'e’d'bil'a'lamp post;

. work for safety reasons and we are ‘ now working on rescheduling. ■ • , , “;We would like to apologise for

'. the delay to the works and we will ]jcontinue to keep local people rinformed'regardingthe new'date! Although we are disappointed that

we had to delay the works we appreciate that Network Rail have

ensure minimum disruption to local residents. They include safe guarding the supply of severah

■ major utilities to (jhatburn when the essential bridge works are car-

Hospital winning infection battle!

by Duncan Smith

NOT a single case of MRS A or Clostridium Difficile infection has been recorded in Clitheroe Community Hospital over the past year. Both it and Accrington Victoria

Hospital share the achievement and a sa result, patients, staff and visitors have all received a big “thank you” from NHS East Lan cashire, which runs both hospitals. Local health bosses put the suc

cess down to high levels of hygiene awareness and good infection con trol measures and precautions. Nursing and Service Provision

Director Val Carman, whose staff run both hospitals, is delighted

with the results, particularly since the two premises are used primari ly by older patients who can be more susceptible to such infec tions. As a m a t te r of routine, all

admissions to the hospital wards in Clitheroe and Accrington are screened routinely for MRSA, and have been since last February. In addition, staff are given a high level of hygiene and infection con trol training. A report to the PCT’s latest

board meeting states th a t there were just two isolated outbreaks of diahorrea and vomiting on the wards, which was attributed to Novovirus. NHS East Lancashire’s Public Health Director Dr Ellis Fried

man said: “The s ituation was monitored daily with both the commissioning and provider arms of the PCT being kept aware. Following the outbreak, a report

was prepared on the control of the outbreak, with actions and recom mendations to be undertaken.” He added that two of the hospi

tal wards had been audited during the last year, with “excellent” results . Both wards scored between 94 and 97% in terms of ward entnronment, ward kitchen, -waste disposal, linen handling and disposal, care of equipment, hand hygiene and clinical practice. Dr Friedman praised the PCT’s

infection control team for their “diligence and application” during their work to increase standards.

hired out a steam boiler fitted onto an Leyland wagon which was used to sterilize green house soil: in the winter months - the nursery Mr Bur ney worked for in Clitheroe later became Barkers. ■ Mr Burney decided to rent a

stall on the market. He bought a Morris wagon and rented two acres of land for £10 per year, b u t his boss told him with petrol costing half -a- crown a gallon he would never make a go of i t - 60 years later his stall is still as strong as ever.":.' Mr Burney said: “ I was

John breaks tuc tuc record

CLITHEROE Round Tabler Steve Lord will take a tuc tuc around the Isle of Man TT race course this weekend. Steve,- who travelled the

length and breadth of the country in his Indian “tuc tuc” last October to raise the profile of air ambu lance associations across the UK, will do a lap of the famous track on Sun day. A tuc tuc is an auto

mated rickshaw named after the “tuc-tuc-tuc” noise.made by its little engine. Capable of carry ing a driver and two pas sengers, tuc tucs are most prevalent in India, where thousands of them work as taxis in the traffic- clogged s tre e ts of the major cities.
