Clitheroe are clear winners
CLITHEROE A came out winners by 17 points from their Mid-Lancs League Badminton Cup first round clash at Evergreens A in Chorley. Fielding a strong side,
the locals overcame a 60- point handicap to progress. Stephen Pym and
Louise Burrill, and Paul Cronshaw and Christine Smitton teamed up to take five wins each. Smitton was also in good
form in the Blackburn Leagues, taking all four of her games, partnering Cronshaw again in the mbced doubles, and Alison Leaver in the ladies’. Leaver took three out of
four matches in her first match of the season, assist ed by Chris Ball. Smitton’s fine run con
tinued at Carlton B, tak ing all four mixed games with Graham Morris.
Double defeat
CLITHEROE’s Super League Darts teams both suffered defeat in the latest round of fbctures. The men’s side went
down to a 6-4 loss a t St Annes, despite star man Harry Pilkington securing a 3-0 win with an average of 72.72. Rick Jones (3-1, 60.42), Mark Quiver (3-1, 71.62) and Graham Robin son (3-0, 68.31) were the other success stories. Meanwhile, the ladies’
side lost out 5-3 at Hay- dock, with Tracey Parker starring with a 2-1 win and a 45.39 average. Sally Slater (2-0, 35.78)
and Daphne Heap (2-0, 29.76) were also successful.

World Cup stars come to town!

FIFA Women’s World Cup star Kelly Smith is the main attrac tion at Shawbridge on Sunday. UEFA Cup holders Arsenal
are in town to take on Adam Lakeland’s Blackburn Rovers Ladies a t Clitheroe (kick-off 1 p.m.). And Smith, widely recognised
as one of the best female players on the planet, is expected to line-up alongside several other
Wakefield.............................. 2 Clitheroe................................ 1 CLITHEROE didn’t get the result th e i r performance deserved on Tuesday night. The Blue's, after taking an
early lead, held on until 16 min utes from time, only to ship two goals in six minutes against their Yorkshire hosts, who stut tered to victory. Clitheroe took the lead in the
sixth minute when capta in Paul Osborne arrived late and reacted first to slot home from close range. Solid defending, with centre
backs Jonathan Smith and Ian Flannery in commanding form, restricted Wakefield’s chances, with the home side’s best open ing of the f i r s t half coming when Craig Laight headed Phil Turner’s comer onto the top of the bar and over. Clitheroe continued to keep
the Waccas a t arm’s length in the second half, before substi
England stars in the Gunners’ ranks, including Three Lions captain Faye White, Mary Phillip, Alex Scott, Karen Car ney, Rachel Yankey and Anita Aante. Entrance is just £3, and £2
for concessions, as Rovers look to stun the FA Women’s lYemier League National Division champions. Meanwhile, Clitheroe are in
action a t Woodley Sports tomorrow, before the short trip
to Bamber Bridge on Tuesday. Chairman Carl Garner said;
“They are both games we need to get something from, although both will be tough fixtures. “We need to pick points up to
continue to climb away from the bottom end of the table.” Ahead of those games, the
Blues were hopeful of complet ing the signing of prolific marks man Danny Toronczak, who hit 29 goals last season for Ossett Albion, to join Scott Redhead, from Lancaster, and Carl
tute Tom Denton was intro duced with a q uarter of the game to go. Denton had an immediate
impact, as he forced an error from keeper James Mann, leaving Sam Denton with an easy tap in. And with 10 minutes remain
ing, the Blues were denied a share of the spoils as Denton scored Wakefield's second, as he climbed highest to p lan t a superb header beyond the reach of Mann following an other inviting corner from Turner. Despite some late pressure,
forcing a number of comers and free kicks, Clitheroe could not find a leveller, and Wakefield saw the game out to secure the points. The Blues will look to bounce
back over the week as they travel to face Woodley Sports on Saturday, and derby rivals Bamber Bridge on Tuesday.
Clilheroe................................1 Ossett Albion........................0 MICKEY Saunders came off the bench to grab a last-gasp winner for Clitheroe on Saturday. And it ended a run of six
games without a victory, for their first success of the new year. With new signing Carl Lomax
partnering Neil Zarac up front, the Blues were determined to exact revenge for a 5-1 loss at Queens Terrace just a fortnight previous. And despite Saunders losing
his place to Lomax in the starting line-up, it was he who proved to be the matchwinner in the fourth minute of added time. Not only was the win a wel
come boost for Neil Reynolds’ side, but it was also Clitheroe’s first clean sheet since the goal less draw with Lancaster back in October. And they will hope this result
is the catalyst tor an upturn in their UniBond League fortunes. With James Mann returning
from injury to take over from the suspended Paul Horridge in goal.

Lomax, from Salford, who both made their debuts in the win against Ossett on Saturday. However, striker Neil Zarac
has been allowed to leave to join Bamber Bridge. The club are also eager to
extend Jonathan Smith’s loan stay, as Garner explained: “Jonathan still has another week of his month’s loan from Fleetwood, and we are looking a t extending th a t , although, obviously, Fleetwood will govern that.”
Blues denied by substitute Mickey grabs late winner
John Osborne Ian Flannery, Gary Stopforth and new signing Scott Redhead also came in, alongside Lomax. And in what was their first
home game since New Years Day, they put in a superb performance against their lofty opponents. Both sides created numerous
chances in an entertaining first half, but both goalkeepers were in outstanding form. And that trend continued after
the break, as both sets of strikers were repeatedly frustrated. But the hosts were to get their
reward in injury time, thanks in part to impressive debutant Lomax. He forced the latest in a long
line of superb saves from the vis iting keeper. But this time, substitute Saun
ders was quick to pounce, and he steadied himself before firing home the loose ball from four yards. Ossett failed to convert a late
free kick, but an equaliser would have been harsh in what was a fully deserved win for the Blues.
YOUNG swimmers had a ta s te of competition as Clitheroe Dolphins took part in an Invitation Gala in Preston. I t was a rare treat for
the club’s more inexperi enced members, with rules not strictly enforced, and spot prizes on offer. Swimmers have recently
been relocated to Great Harwood, Barnoldswick and Stonyhurst Pools, with Ribblesdale Pool closed for maintenance, but the young Dolphins all performed well, with cer tificates awarded to all who improved their per sonal best times. Most improved at 25m
were Alice Cuthbertson in the backstroke, Charlotte Norman in the breast stroke, Charlotte Leach in the butterfly, and Robert High in the freestyle. Over 50m, most
improved were Lydia Clothier-Hill (backstroke), Alice Cuthbertson (breast stroke), Sarah Gibbs (but terfly) and Reuben Hirst (freestyle). Ribblesdale Pool is
expected to reopen at the beginning of March, and anyone interested in join ing the Dolphins can con tact Barbara Jones (01200 423064).
