46 Clitheroe Advertiser&Times, Thursday, January 31st, 2008 lifetime boost from McLean

College set for trip of

STONYHURST Col lege are set for the hockey trip of a life time in the summer. A squad of 24 are

embarking on a tour to South Africa, flying from London in July to play Under 17 and Under 16 matches against three schools in Cape Town, and two in Durban. Between matches in

Cape Town, they will visit the famous Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerat ed, and take a full-day peninsula tour, taking in Table Mountain, Seal Island, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Cape Point and Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony. They will also visit

the famous Victoria and Albert Waterfront and the city’s Township, where they wll have the chance to sample Zulu and Xhosa cuisine. After flying to Dur

ban, they hope to experi ence the excitement of surf launching from Umhlanga Rocks in a custom-made, state-of- the-art 26ft rigid rubber duck with two 125hp motors. As the boat speeds

through the warm Indi an Ocean waters, they will almost certainly be accompanied by the resi dent bottlenose dolphins who love to play along side and leap into the air. They will also visit

the Ushaka Marine World, 15 hectares of prime beach front and Africa’s largest marine theme park, and go on game drives in Hluhluwe to spot the Big Five - lion, leopard, rhino, buf falo and elephant. The final memorable

experience will be a boat cruise in the St Lucia Estuary, where they will see the many hippos, crocodiles and prolific birdlife which makes the wetlands famous. “This is the second

foreign hockey trip Stonyhurst has organ ised, the first was two years ago to Holland,” said Claire Brotherhood, Head of Girls’ Games at Stonyhurst College. ‘"These tours are

important character building exercises. Not only will the girls experi ence competitive match es against foreign teams, they will also see and do things that will live in their memory for the rest of their lives.”

R im in g lo n ...............4 Enfield ..................... 0 MCLEAN started a n d . finished the scoring as Rimington boosted their t i t le push ag ains t Enfield. On a good surface, the

hosts quickly got into their stride, with McLean firing narrowly wide with a fierce strike from just inside the box. It was no surprise when

he opened the scoring, charging down an attempted clearance with his chest and watching the ball spin into the net. The visitors almost lev

elled immediately, when a harshly-awarded free kick curled over the wall and onto the bar.

But it was always going

to take something special to beat keeper Kershaw, who looked back to his best. How the scoreline

remained 1-0 at the break is anyone’s guess, but the lead was doubled soon after the re s ta r t when Paton latched onto a poor clearance and slotted home. Penman then dribbled

his way into the box to score, before McLean completed the scoring with a 20-yard drive. Enfield Reserves . . .2 Riminglon Reserves 1 RIMINGTON’S second string got back to win ning ways in fine style, as the locals did th e weekend double over

Enfield. The visitors started

brightly, with Dinsdale pulling the strings in mid- field, and Brunskill burst ing forward a t every opportunity. And they took the lead

when Dinsdale and Carter combined for Brunskill to poke home his 21st of the season. It was 2-0 on the half

hour, as Dearden’s inswinging corner was met by Carter who stabbed home from close range. And Rimington

grabbed a third before the break, with Dinsdale playing in Carter who made no mistake. Midway through the

second half, the locals made it 4-0 as Carter

raced through and tried to chip the keeper. 'The keeper parried his

initial effort, but after the ball returned to Carter, he unselfishly set up Johns, who blasted home. With the game seem

ingly won, Rimington seemed to take their foot off the gas for the last 20 minutes. Brunskill was then

adjudged to have handled in the box, but justice was done as Farmer saved the resulting penalty, diving to his right. This sparked a mini

revival, with Enfield soon pulling two goals back. But Rimington had done more than enough to hold on tor three valuable points.

Young seals latest win

Hursl Green ............................ I Slacksleads.............................. 0 A SOLITARY strike from Mark Young was enough to give Hurst Green their eighth straight win. The home side were missing lead

ing scorer Danny Walker, with Ian Simpson deputising. But the locals started positively,

and with the wind at their backs, put the visitors under early pres sure. However, it was Stacksteads who

had the first chance of the after noon, as a 20-yard drive cannoned back off tbe post. Tipton and Bamber were domi

nating the flanks for Hurst Green, but with no end product.

Coupe then had the hosts’ best

chance, as his close range header forced the keeper into an excellent save. Seedall then had a chance as his

low shot went just wide, and Young should have done better with a close range header. Stacksteads came out strongly

after the restart, with Hurst Green’s back tour being stretched, but stay ing solid. A free kick was tipped over the

bar, before Green responded to the threat with both Tipton and Young beginning to turn the screw. Young’s shot was expertly saved,

and with Young following up, the keeper made another excellent save

their hosts for the majori ty of the first half. Coulter had the best

cbance, beading agonising ly over from six yards. Stoddart also had two excellent shots bravely

to deny the home side. Seedall had another powerful

strike which just fizzed the wrong side of the post, before the deadlock was finally broken in fortuitous cir cumstances. Visiting keeper Hurst was to be

the villain, as his poor goal kick was nodded forward to Young, and with Hurst scrambling back. Young pow erfully drove home to give the hosts the lead. Malley had a half chance to make

it two only for his header to fly over, but Green bung on for a crucial win. Hurst Green are at home again

tomorrow, as they entertain Bor- rowdale United (kick-off 2-15 p.m.).

Frustrating day! ®

Clilheroe RVFC......................................................12 Colne and Nelson....................................................29 CLUB captain Ben Graves must be wondering what he has done to upset the rugby Gods, as he contemplated another frustrating afternoon. With the game in the balance, he was denied a seeming

:

legitimate touchdo\wi by an unsighted referee. Playing into the strong wind in the first half, Clitheroe r v

went in at half-time three tries adrift, two directly from ' • mistakes - an interception and a knock on under the posts, But Clitheroe still felt they were in the game, with the

wind at their backs, altbough Colne were first to score in the second half.

Eventually Clitheroe began to get their act togeth&^\&;'

and some punishing forward drives brought them close the Colne line, and from the middle of the maul, number eight Ollie McEntyre waltzed over tor the score. Wave after wave of drives again brought Clitheroe with

in yards of the line, and Graves barrelled over, only, to everyone’s surprise, the try was not given, as the ret could not see the grounding. That knocked the maroons out of their stride, although,

Edmonson was dragged over for his first try for the club, after several years of trying. Special mention must go to full back James Dickinson,

late on, they crossed again. They drove for the line, and lock forward Richard

making his first XV debut, while Martin Lafranceschma is leaving Clitheroe to work down south. This Saturday, the first XV travel to North Manches

ter, while the seconds host Colne and Nelson seconds (kick off 2-15 p.m.), before England face Wales on the clubhouse big screen (kick-off 4-30 p.m.). Preston GH..............................................................57 Clilheroe U14ll5s....................................................24 CLITHEROE battled right through this game, scor ing some great tries. James Kidd made good yards all through the match,

and he was a worthy try scorer in the first half, while Rob Spenceley-Jones ran and tackled well, scoring a great for ward’s trj' towards the end of the game. Clitheroe did not falter, scoring four tries in all, with

James Wilde kicking a couple of conversions. A home game against Rossendale is scheduled for Sun- ^

day, with game details to be confirmed on the Hotline. w 9 Clitheroe Buccaneers Under 12s played two shortened

11-a-side games at Colne and Nelson, losing 5-0 and 15-10. In the first game, Colne pressure finally told as weak

tackling allowed the fly-half to break through the line and score the match-winning try. In the second game, poor tackling allowed the opposi

tion to run in three very quick tries. However, he young Buccaneers kept their heads up, and

Jarvis Stanton fed the ball out to James Carter, wbo barged his way over from five yards. From the kick-off, Colne conceded a penalty, and Sam

Hill took a quick tap ball and darted over in the corner to score a second try’. But the locals were unable to secure the try to bring the

scores level, and went down to a narrow defeat. All teams are training on Sunday, at the clubhouse from

throughout. But just after the hour,

WFC grabbed the only goal, as Chadwick thread ed a pass through for Hick- ling, who took the ball on his chest and rifled home. The hosts had the ball in

the net five minutes from time, only for the off-side flag to come to WFC’s res cue.

Waddington crash out

Oakworlh Reserves . .3 Waddinglon Reserves 2 WADDINGTON nar rowly crashed out of the Craven League Third Division Cup. A decent first half per

formance saw them forge a two-goal lead. John Clement lobbed

tbe keeper from 30 yards, before Simon Hodgson fired home. The hosts pulled a goal

back before the break, but Ryan McCarthy was then sent off, along with an Oakworth player. The referee then award

ed the hosts a hotly-dis puted penalty, which was converted, with Ben Par sons dismissed. Oakworth then found a

cruel late winner. The locals are at home

to Cowling on Saturday, meet Roefield 1-15 p.m.
