Turner painting of local landmark
TWO years ago, an interesting story developed regarding an early 18th Century oil paintinjg of Clitheroe in Towneley Hall Art Gallery in Burnley The a r tis t’s name, Mathias
Read (1669 -1747), was eventually confirmed and a full-size copy is now on display in the library. Another story has emerged in
recent months involving J. M. W. Turner (1775 - 1851), one of the most famous English artists. In 1799 he sketched and later
painted a watercolour of Eadsford Bridge. From the early years of the 19th Century until the 1980s, this picture - 31cms X 21cms - has been known by the owners, London auc tion houses and art galleries, as Richmond Bridge, Yorkshire. We should remind ourselves why
a London-born artist, son of a baker, was making a sketch and watercolour we have never seen until next week. It is time to reveal some of the history of this picture starting with recent times and going back to 1799. Staff at Christie’s, Agnews Art

Christie’s, public auction, under the hammer, to Agnews. Owner indicated to Christie’s that the painting had been in the family since the early 1800s. f) 1922 (March 17th) for auction
at Christie’s; did not meet the reserve price, returned to owners, i.e. thel953 family. g) 1799 (April) Turner commis
sioned by Charles Towneley on behalf of , Thomas Dunham Whitaker to paint watercolours with a view to engravings being done for his book. History of Whalley Parish (1801). These engravings may be seen in the fourth edition, 1876, available in Clitheroe and Whalley reference libraries. Whitaker could not have done this work without the financial

backing of local landowners like Towneley who already, even at this stage, had knowledge of Turner’s ability. Others involved were Thomas Lister Parker, Lord Cur- zon. Lady Howe, Thomas Weld and Lord Ribblesdale. I t was the last named who funded the Eads ford Bridge work. Other water colours include Gawthorpe Hall, Towneley Hall, Browsholme Hall, Whalley Abbey (three), Shireburn Chapel, Mitton, and Stonyhurst. Eadsford Bridge stands out as the main landscape painting. At the age of 24, Turner was
already making a name for himself. In 1797 he completed a tour of northern England, including York shire, Durham, Northumberland, the Lake District and Lancaster supported, among others by the families of the Earl of Harewood and Fawkes of Famley Hall, Otley. By the early 1800s, Turner had his own gallery in London, run by his father, access to other galleries as well as membership of the Royal Academy. With the publication of the pic
ture next week there wll be addi tional information about the theme sometimes associated with the work, together with the long term owners and, surprisingly. King George II who died 40 years before the painting was done.
