Rights for
children NORTH West MEP Gary Titley believes chil dren will enjoy better protection right across Europe, once the new EU reform treaty comes into force. Speaking in Stras
bourg, Mr Titley told fel low MEPs that the Lis bon Treaty had included the protection of chil dren’s rights as a funda mental objective of the EU. Labour MEPs want
measures put in place to stop children being put at risk from dangers such as online exploitation and child trafficking. They also want children’s
«
' ;hts to be covered by OSS border laws and ensure th a t criminal
information about all known sex offenders from EU countries is shared frequently. Mr Titley said: “Once the Lisbon Treaty is on the statute book, all EU policies and laws will effectively become child-proofed. “That should ensure
children’s rights and interests are at the fore front of policy develop ments, not a mere after thought.”

A REVIVED Ribble Val ley Rotaract held its first Charter night for several years.
Sometimes described as
the junior branch of the Rotary Club, Rotaract is a club for 18 to 30-year- olds dedicated to fun, fel lowship and community service. The Ribble Val ley branch of the club became dormant some years ago following the untimely death of its president. Heather Schofield, in a diving accident. Now a handful of individuals have got the club up and running again and are hoping to recruit more new mem bers. The club’s president
Amelia Russell and fellow Charter Night organiser Gillian Emmott hosted a group of Rotaract presi dents from Lancashire Rotaract Clubs, plus Rotarians from Clitheroe,

Village school scoops £5,000 grant by Beth Ellison
A CHIPPING school has won £5,000 in recognition of its efforts to achieve sustainability. Brabins Endowed School is
one of just 56 schools to success fully beat off competition from across England to ivin the grant, awarded by the National College for School Leadership. To bid for the money, Brabins
submitted details of current sus tainable projects, how they have been led and how they propose to share their experiences with other schools. The entry was recognised for
its already progressive sustain able practise and for its high quality leadership.
Brabins was presented with its
permanent green Eco-Schools flag in September last year. It has a proactive eco-committee which attracts support from par ents, governors and local envi ronmentalists and has a well- established recycling programme that reduces its waste disposal costs and the amount of general waste being taken away to land fill sites. Little money is spent on pur
chasing local authority refuse sacks and the school generates an income from some of its proj ects, which is used to maintain a high level of classroom support. The school is presently investi gating the introduction of solar energy to further reduce electric ity bills in the future.
Brabins, which has links rvith
a Canadian school, is closely studying its counterparts’ sus tainable school policy and the initiatives it has in place to con serve energy. Using the grant money, the
school will now form a network with other schools in the area to share good practice in sustain able thinking. It is also set to assist NCSL with research into leading sustainability in schools in varying educational settings. Toby Greany, NCSL’s Opera
tional Director of Research and Policy, said: “We have been extremely impressed with the number and the standard of applications we received from schools bidding for the grants. Its really shows the effort which
schools are starting to put in to sustainability. This commitment is great news and shows that the scale of the problem is recog nised among school leaders, we look fonvard to them assisting us with our research. “We remain dedicated to sup
porting heads to be sustainable and hope that these grants go some way towards helping them achieve this. It seems likely that the government will expect schools to achieve significant reductions in carbon emissions in coming years, so the issue is becoming increasingly impor tant.
Our ultimate aim at NCSL is
to'support school leaders to explore and share effective prac tice in this critical area.”
