IT’S official - Clitheroe has a “quality” town council. The application to become a “Quality”

Town Council was recently approved by the Lancashire Association of Parish and Town Council’s Accreditation Panel. To achieve this status the town council

had to show by submitting a portfolio of evidence that it is representative of the whole community, communicates with residents and is properly managed. Town council clerk Mr Ian Woolsten-

croft said: “The W'ork required took a couple of years to assemble and included the need to obtain the Certificate in Local Council Administration, which was achieved in January last year and attained with distinction.

AN open meeting showcasing the devel opments under way at Clitheroe Castle and Museum takes place in the town on Monday evening. Hosted by Clitheroe Civic Society, the

"r^ .c> .

meeting will include a presentation by the project architect, Neal Charlton, highlighting the work now underway as part of the £3.2m. scheme to upgrade and improve the museum and surround ing buildings. Pauline Wood, chairman of Clitheroe

Civic Society, commented: “After asking around, we have found an astonishing lack of awareness of there being any development at all on the museum site. As this is the largest sum of money ever spent on one project in Clitheroe, we want to encourage people to attend the meeting and find out aliout this historic development which will affect present and future generations. “The purpose is not to revisit the pros

and cons of the development, but to enable the architect to explain the think ing behind the scheme and give details of how it will finally look.” The meeting takes place at Brookside

School, in Bright Street, Clitheroe, begin ning at 7-30 p.m., and all are welcome.

“When I was appointed in April 2005,

one of the main aims was to help the town council achieve Quality Status and I am pleased to say this was achieved.” The scheme was launched nationwide

in 2003 with the aim of providing a benchmark minimum standard for parish and town councils across the country. Since then 500, out of 8,500 parish and town councils have achieved the required standards and there are 14 in the Lan cashire area, including Chatburn Parish Council. Our photograph shows the Mayor of Clitheroe, Coun. David Berry man, receiving the certificate from Mr Gordon Johnson, chairman of Lancashire and Merseyside Accreditation Panel, Marion Gelder, the panel’s secretary, with Mr Woolstencroft.
