Wolces Under, 8s . . . .1 Knuzden Juniors . . .2 THE young Wolves suf fered their first league defeat in seven months on Sunday. In blustery condi

tions, both teams played in a manner befitting their league positions, and it was against the run of play that the visitors took the lead. From a corner, the ball was only half- cleared and the returned shot was deflected past the impressive ' James Billington in goal. Continuous endeav

our and some wonderful football brought about a deserved equaliser before the break, when some skilful play on the edge of the box earned Wolves a free kick. And Owen Jackson

gave the Knuzden defence and keeper no chance from 10 yards. Wolves continued to

press for the winner in an evenly contested sec ond period, and were very unfortunate to lose to a sucker-punch goal with the very last kick of the game.

Duo hit hat-tricks in Rimington goal romp

Borrowdale....................0 Rimington....................9 RIMINGTON were made to work harder for this win than the scoreline suggests. In fact, the home side

were the better team for the first 20 minutes, and could have scored on a cou ple of occasions past an out-of-sorts Kershaw. Borrowdale were made

to pay-for their profligacy, as Rimington started to get into the game and make chances. Dinsdale opened the

scoring 12 minutes from the break when he beat the off-side trap and raced clear, and though his initial shot was parried by the keeper, he stroked home the rebound. Five minutes later

Paton broke down the left and cut inside before rifling an unstoppable shot into the far corner. After the break.

Mankowski released man- of-the-match McLean, and he raced through to

• fire home. McLean was at it again

five minutes later to make it 4-0, before he released Paton in the box, whose sublime back-heel found Dinsdale to stroke the ball home home. Before the hour mark,

both McLean, who was sent through by Paton, and then Dinsdale, finish ing a Paton cross, secured ■their hat-tricks. Substitute Dearden had

an effort which came back off the foot of the post, but fell to Walmsley, who rammed the ball into the roof of the net. McLean was rewarded

for his endeavour and his willingness to cover all of the pitch by scoring his fourth, which certainly gave his manager some thing to think about

regarding his striking options for the rest of the season. Braithwaite’s side are

well-placed with nine games to go, and still in two cups, but he insists there is still plenty of work to do before any silverware comes their way, starting at home to bottom of the table Settle, who will be desperate for points if they are to avoid relegation. Riminglon Reserves . .5 Peel Park Reserves . . . .2 RIMINGTON carried on from last week’s demoli tion of Rock with a com fortable victory over Peel Park. The villagers took only

20 minutes to find the net, Leach playing through for Threlfall, whose pin-point centre found Carter, who slotted past the keeper into the far corner. ■ Not long after, Riraing- ton doubled their lead

when Matt Garner’s flick found Threlfall, who blast ed the ball across the keep er into the far corner. Rimington added a

third when Carter latched on to a loose ball and smashed home from 25 yards, and Carter made it 4-0 with his hat-trick goal

-just before half-time, as he robbed the centre half, and his left-foot drive found the back of the net off the inside of the post. After the break, straight

from the kick-off, Threlfall should have made it five as he found himself one on one and somehow blasted his shot high and wide. However, after wasting a

number of chances, Rim ington were punished for their lack of composure, and got caught on the break. The Peel Park centre forward was

left unmarked, and his fierce

shot looped over the out stretched hand of Ander son to make it 4-1. This sparked a revival

from the visitors, who got their second moments later from a corner, despite the efforts of Anderson. Rimington sprung back

into life, and within min utes restored their three- goal lead. A long throw from

Threlfall found Garner, and the big centre forward made no mistake, power ing his header home from eight yards. Rimington manager

Farmer missed a penalty as the locals looked for a sixth, but they ran out comfortable winners. Man-of-the-match was

Sam Johns, who cemented his position in the heart of midfield.

Hurst Green Waddington hit back for win end long wait

Peel Park....................................... 1 llitrsl Green................................ 3 HURST Green extended their unbeaten run to 12 games as they came from behind to win this scrappy affair at struggling Peel Park. Chances were at a premium

during the first quarter, but as the half wore on. Green started to get wingers Young and Tipton into the game, and gaps started to appear in the Peel Park defence. Hurst Green were gifted a way

into the game when they were awarded a penalty for a dubious handball on the half hour mark, but Seedall’s kick flew wide of the post. The penalty miss fired up the

home side, and they forced a cou ple of corners, the second of which they opened the scoring via. 'The ball was curled in and evad

ed everyone, as it hit the back post and went in off a Peel Park player. The visitors were again told

that their first half performance left a lot to be desired, and Green started the second half at a fero

cious pace. It wasn’t long before they were' back on equal terms. A delightfully-flighted Young

free kick was headed against the bar by Wilkinson, and Tony Coupe was on hand to head in the rebound. Green were virtually camped

inside the home side’s half as they dominated possession, and huge gaps also started to appear in the Peel Park defence. Stuart Malley grabbed his sec

ond goal of the season as he lashed in a loose ball following an almighty goalmouth scramble. And the final 15 minutes of the

game were almost farcical, as mis take after mistake was made by the Peel backline, so it came as no surprise at all to see the visitors extend their lead when a Colin Piper through ball was latched onto by Martyn Seedall, and he emphatically finished to give the visitors the three points. Hurst Green travel to play

Rock Rovers on Saturday, kick-off 2-15 p.m.

Gargrave........................................3 Waddinglon................................5 WADDINGTON travelled to Yorkshire in search of their first win of 2008. The large pitch appeared to suit

the villagers, making the most of the width. The tone was set from the first

minute, with Waddington playing football from the back, \vith Simon Holden and Stephen Holden effec tive down the right. ■After 15 minutes, they broke the

deadlock when Peter Fletcher judged the high wind and scored straight from a corner. Within minutes, neat work from

Martin Cane saw Sam Deane and Mark Harrison combine to set up Ryan McCarthy, who finished well. Waddington were now in full flow,

breaking from all parts of the pitch, and Peter Fletcher and Stephen Holden combined \vith superb pass es to set up Harrison, who, with only the keeper to beat, shot straight at him. Gargrave made the most of the miss and immediately responded

\vith a well-taken goal. However, on half-time, good work

from Eddie Snowden put Deane tluxmgh, who, under pressure, slot ted the ball home to make it 3-1. After the break, Gargrave quick

ly pulled one back, but Wadding ton, almost from the kick-off, put together a superb passing move, started by Paul Ainger and skilfully finished by Deane, for his second of the match. . Gargrave pressed hard and again

hauled themselves back in the match with a third goal. With time running out,

Waddington stepped up the pace and made changes, with the intro duction of player-manager Hirst in midfield. Gargrave were committed,

Waddington broke down the right, and after good combination between Holden and Harrison, Fletcher ghosted into the box and converted from a tight angle. Waddington deserved to take all

three points, and will take added confidence into this weekend’s cup gameatCononley.

'Crazy’ 10 minutes hit Chipping hard

Farrington Villa........... 1 Chipping

..................4

CHIPPING dominated this match and should have won comfortably, but a crazy 10-minute period either side of half-time meant salvaging a draw was a good result. The villagers bossed the

opening period and raced into a two-goal lead. A fantastic corner was swung into the box and

I>UIERM

met by a bullet header from the soaring Dave Banks for the opener. Chipping could have

scored several more by the time they doubled the lead. 01 Hayhurst ran onto a

good throughball and lashed the ball into the net, despite the efforts of the keeper. Chipping looked to be cruising towards half-time

NDIBURNM

with a comfortable lead, but they blew it with a couple of minutes of poor defending, in which they conceded two sloppy goals to go into the break level at 2-2. The second half began

in equally disastrous fash ion as the villagers conced ed two more to give them selves everything to do, trailing 4-2. To the Chipping play

ers’ credit, they did not let their heads drop, and bat tled back to draw, although they could have even snatched it at the end. Some excellent work

down the right by Hay hurst saw him swing in an inch-perfect cross, which found Mark Fordham unmarked on the back post to nod home. With time running out.

Hayhurst repeated the feat by crossing from the same side, this time to find marauding left back, man- of-the-match 01 Johnson, who sent a looping header into the top corner to level things up. Poor defending gave

Hayhurst the chance to win it at the end, but he sent his effort just wide of the upright to end the game level at 4-4.

Emi^NQTHERiiOCAiaEAMjW

Connolly......................... 1 WFC Clitheroe..............4 FOUR goals in the second half gave WFC Clitheroe a superb mn over high-flyers Connolly on Saturday. The first half belonged

to the home side, as they battered the WFC goal, and if it hadn’t been for the heroics of the goalkeeper, the Pimlico Road side could have been 4-0 down at the break, saving numerous one on on^^ As it was, it was oifl™.e

one goal that separat^t'he teams, coming on 10 min utes when the Waggon defenders were guilty of not clearing the ball from their 18-yard box. Mark Hargreaves had

the visitors’ only real good chance of the half when he fired goalwards from a Danny Woodhead cross, only to see it saved. But 10 minutes into the

second half. Matt Oakley replaced Hargreaves up front, and Matt Coulter and Oakley linked up almost straight away. The pair shared four

goals in a frantic second half, that also saw two bookings for the home side as things almost boiled over. Oakley got WFC's first,

as Coulter laid the ball off beautifully for him to fin ish across the goalkeeper from the edge of the box. And with their tails up,

Waggon then took the lead when Coulter smashed home the second, before doubling his tally for the afternoon by creeping in at the back post and neatly heading home to put the game beyond Connolly. Then Oakley grabbed

his second after a neat through ball from Stod- dart, chipping the keeper.

Bradley ...........................5 Waddinglon Reserves .7 WADDINGTON had to battle hard to come away with the points at bottom of the league Bradley, thanks largely to four goals from debutant Liam Mur phy. The home side took the

lead, but Murphy fired Waddington level from the tightest of angles, quickly adding a second, before Hodgson made it 3-1. Murphy completed his

hat-trick, before the vil lagers hit the self destruct button and allowed Bradley back into the game with three quick goals. But Murphy struck

again tor Waddington’s fifth to lead 5-4 at the break. However, Bradley came

out in the second half and equalised, before good work from Hodgson set up James Waterworth to make it 6-5, and theijd||er a corner had been cjl|R)J, Adam Spencer beat the keeper from 30 yards to make it 7-5 and seal a hard-fought victory. On Saturday, Wadding

ton entertain Hellifield at Twitter Lane, with players asked to meet at 1-15 p.m. at the ground.

Fish are too big to fry!

Wigan Jlhs ...................52 Clilheroe Cavaliers . . .6 WIGAN, the big fish in a small pond, managed to beat the minnows for a third time this season. The Cavaliers knew

they had a huge task ahead, having been sound ly beaten in both previous encounters, and they showed their intent from the off, with huge tackles from centre Paul Callaghan and number eight Mark Curphy on their opposite numbers. Wigan realised Clitheroe

weren’t going to roll over without a fight. The Clitheroe defence

held resolute for the first 15 minutes, and the game plan looked to be working until the opposition back line finally found a gap and managed to get over the whitewash. A period in the first half

saw Clitheroe camped in the Wigan 22 metre line for a number of phases. Some solid rucking saw

valuable metres eaten up by the tight five. The referee was on hand

to see one of the Wigan players place his hands in the ruck, and Clitheroe were awarded a penalty which they managed to kick, and half-time showed a respectable 19-3 score line. During the break, a number of tactical substi tutions were made, as vet eran Roger Holmes entered the fray, and young buck Aaron Atkin son replaced loose head prop Windy Rawstron. From the off. Holmes

was in among it, causing the home team to lose their composure. In fact the home winger

took such offence to Holmes that he received a yellow card for a number of punches thrown. Normally the Cavaliers

would be able to exploit this one-man overlap, but to Wigan’s credit, they are not perched at the top of the league for nothing and they defended resolutely. In fact, they then played

their best period of the game, and countered on a number of occasions to score through their speedy backs. Clitheroe weren’t fin

ished though, and man aged to score another penalty, which unfortu nately, did nothing to dint the final score. To the Cavaliers’ credit,

they didn’t give in against a team that are playing in a league well below their level and ability. On Saturday, Clitheroe

RUFC’s first team are at home to Carnforth, while the seconds are at Rossendaie.
