Residents slam ‘double standards’ on bin service
EXCLUSIVE by Faiza Afzaal
A COSTLY “special service” for house holders who are refusing to leave their wheelie bins a t designated collection points has been condemned as “a waste of taxpayers’ money”. Ratepayers are demanding a “full and
rigorous” inquiry into claims that some householders are receiving special treat ment from the council. It has emerged that Kibble Valley Bor
ough Council is spending around £1,700 a week to hire a smaller bin lorry and additional crews to provide an “interim service” for 50 properties in the Kibble Valley - one belonging to a councillor. This “unique service” is provided tor
those choosing not to drag their bins to a designated collection point, meaning bin men have to personally collect rubbish from these properties. Although officials at the Tory-run
council insist the controversial scheme is temporary and is in place for those expe riencing difficulties in rural areas, there are growing fears a number of residents have opted to ignore the rules and are receiving “special treatment” from the council. Taxpayers are calling for the service to
be scrapped and are accusing the council of double standards. They say the cost cannot be justified at a time when key local serxdces are being cut or ignored to save money. One resident, who did not want to be
named, said: “It’s not fair. There appear to be double standards in operation here. There should be one rule for everyone. Just because people have fancy houses and lengthy drives in rural areas, this is not to say they cannot drag their bins out to the front of their homes. Everyone else has to do it. The money being wasted on this ‘extra service’ could be better spent.” Liberal Democrat councillor Graham
Sowter believes every householder should adapt to enable the new waste collection system to work. He added: “I think the interim service
should certainly be wound down as rapid ly as possible once the problems are resolved. The council should draw the line for people who are being unco-operative and unreasonable. “It’s not fair on residents who are abid
ing by the rules and making an effort put ting their bins out at designated collec tion points.
