crunch and the killing of Baby P as the main alternatives, it has been a welcome relief.

I I have followed Charles’ career with

interest. As the son of a Greek immigrant, he has done exceptionally well at adapting

.himself to our ways. He pays enormous, attention to “fitting in”, even when it comes to dress. In England, he wears trousers and, when in Scotland, the kilt. Sometimes I think i t would be nice to know who the real Charles Windsor is,

, but, like the chameleon, he amply changes his image depending on who he is with. In this, he follows something of a family

tradition. His mother’s family name, which he chooses to use, used to be Saxe- Coburg-Gotha, b u t , when i t became unfashionable to be German, they changed it to Windsor and this has given rise to the odd perception that they are English, after aU.

Our American cousins are busy patting

themselves on the back for electing the son of an immigrant as their Head of State,

tVT'.S *». 1* .»f »» » - ■ - ■ . .,x .1 but they do not seem to have noticed that,

• throughout our history, we have usually had foreigners or the sons.of foreigners as

ours. . . ' Of course, it is an oddity, of our system

that there are only two qualifications for

- becoming Head of State and that neither of them is to be English or even to sp e ^

■the language. The first qualification, of course, is to be the first, legitimate son of the last incumbent - a test which Chsirles passed with flying colours-and the second is not to be, or be married to, a Kbman Catholic.

; So far, he has passed the second test too,

but I do sometimes wonder whether it is quite respectable to accept any job on those terms. If my editor had offered me

Looking Back 50 years ago

A YEAR after he first had to postpone a BBC production because he was play ing the lead in the Burnley Operatic Society’s production, “Love from Judy”, Clitheroe tenor Raymond Grice (26), of Whalley Road, was told his recent audi tion with the BBC drama department was successful and his name was placed on the castings list. • The question of playing fields for

rural schools needed to be reviewed, Bowland District Education Sub-Com mittee urged. I t came after a discussion about Thorneyholme school, which was grossly overcrowded. But it was felt unneccessary to allocate a large portion of agricultural land for playing space.

: • Poppy Day collections in Chatburn broke the record for the area. The girls of Riversmead School, Grindleton, played an important part in the collec tion by.making 400 extra sprays. The organisers'supplied just 250 sprays.

Some lightweight news

T has been diverting to read the cover age of the Prince of Wales provoked by his 60th birthday. With the credit

this column on terms that I should never ■

become a Rommi Catholic, I think I might have told her where she could stick it, not out of any particular sense of pride, but out of ^ p l e solidarity with my fellow ciU I izens who adhere to the Roman Catholic | religion.

, ilf she had told me th a t I could only I keep the job so long as my wife did not

. convert to the Roman Catholic religion, I think I would have been even more direct. Funnily enough, I can imagine exactly

what^vould have occurred if I had come home' from the interview and told my wife

• that I had got the job, but in order to get it I had had to promise that she would never convert to Papism. It would not have been | a pleasant sight.

. ' The truth is that I am profoundly sorry

for Prince Charles. His birthday photo-1 graiph shotvs him wearing dozens of orders and decorations, none of which he won by | his own efforts, but sill of which were given him because of his mother. Poor, pathetic fellow!

. ' .i-Peter Briggs, from Ribchester, won a brace or awards, while Jane Thornber, from Sawley, claimed another of the key prizes when they both graduated from Harper Adams University College, Shrop shire. Peter (23) graduated with an upper sec

annually to a final-year student for the best beef project or dissertation. Peter was nominated for the award by senior lecturer Simon Marsh, who said: “Peter comes from a beef and sheep fanning fam- ; ily in Lancashire. After finishing his exams he gained the position of trainee'

■ manager for Dunbia, based at Sawley and is hoping to progress to the position of ■ Procurement Manager for the company. Peter was a ‘hands-on’ practical student. He was hard working, keen and conscien tious and capable of taking responsibility for the ‘day-to-day’ management of the cattle.”

PARENTS and governors travelled to London to put their case to the Secre tary of State for Education, Sir Keith Joseph, to oppose the closure of Down- ham C of E Primary School. A report had just been released announcing the closures of the C of E schools at Down- ham, Grindleton, H u rs t Green and Ribchester. • There were fears th a t the Ribble

The plans, submitted by the police, were to site a 200ft mast which would provide microwave contact with the main police radio transmitter on Winter Hill. • A call for more young members to

join the Chatburn and District Branch of the Royal -British Legion was made by its chairman at the group’s annual meeting.
