Hospital: fruitless exercise, I fear

L® i^ ^ L A T IV E to the article" in' last

* ^Week's edit ion of. the Clither'oe Advertiser and Times, '.'Campaign to ' stop demolition", I think the cause will be fruitless, as in my view the- decision has already been made. ■ ; Like The Mount at Accrington and other community hospitals and county residential homes, Lan-; cashire County Council, along with the PCT will have already decided ^ what is going to happen. The Mount ■ (two wards, 42 beds) is now offices for a number of faceless wonders. ' I wrote to my local MP Nigel

Evans in an attempt to prevent this, but no luck, although Nigel did all- he could, I am sure of that. I wish good luck to all who 'will be

fighting this cause and-I wish all of the campaigners well. I also hope and pray that I am proved wrong, I will not be holding my breath though.

NORMAN IRELAND, Peel Park Close, Clithcroe.

Cheers to a decade of helping others I a littie wt of their

own medicine! I COULD not believe what I was reading la s t week regarding the protests at the possible addition of 60 houses at Calderstones Park. I was incredulous at the hypocrisy

of it all, with Mr 6ury and all the other “NIMBYs” having a meeting at the Aspinall Arms. These are the same people tha t Had no qualms about moving into Calderstones Park and helping to . destroy the ambience of ;.what was a very pleas ant village. I spend many moments each day. trying to exit and enter my road inbetween speeding “Chelsea tractors”. '

• I think.it'is marvellous that they

now can have a tiny Insight into: what it was like:when the hundreds of houses at Calderstones Park were originally put up.-'■

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED. Parking issues

must be resolved I HAVE followed with interest the controversy over parking in Moor Lane and also the general dearth of parking spaces-within the town. My opinion is that street parking

spaces could and should be max imised by minor alterations to the parking mode. Observations indicate that cars are more often than not badly parked in as much as they have between them far more space than is necessary, and also frequently nearly half a car length between them and the end of the parking bay. This could possibly be prevented by, white line division of the total space into median car. lengths, these lines extending a short distance both into the roadway and onto the pavement so as to be visible from the driving

^ seat and in mirrors. • Alternat ively and in my view

1 ^ ^ o r e clearly to where the car was s ^reversing, and also gain better visi bility^ whe'n exiting. I understand from Coun.' Sutcliffe that Lancashire ■ County Council do not approve of this system'; but it'is widely and- effectively used in many parts of-the country. Any'decision should tje based upon engineering and safety

aspect; I would estimate an increase of a t least 40% in the number of spaces.

- . 'With reference to correspondence in the previous issue, it is of great • benefit to the town that a parking time limit in generous excess of actu al shopping time is provided by the major stores. It would also relieve certain people of the necessity to, obliging or otherwise, park or shop in a certain supermarket if the town car parks were free and thus removed temptation for drivers to park self ishly or illegally on town streets. Before this happens, pigs ■will master the art of flyingl It is quite possible that perhaps

due to the economic downturn, the present benevolent attitude of the big retailers will change because of the need for income. The authorities must also consider the potential parking requirements of an upsurge in -visitors to the town if the hoped for potential of the Castle renova tions and additions is to materialise.

Deliberate placing

of paper piles ON a recent visit to Gisbum Forest I came across a “paper trail’’ by the side of the road. Every few yards there were little

piles of : papers. The papers were A5 in size anji printed with a repeating pattern of solid grey rectangles on one side, then neatly folded three or fourtimes. I found papers all the way along

the three-and-a-half mile stretch from Stephen Moor Crossroads-to the upper edge of the forest. From ■ the spacing and number in each pile, I estimate that there must have been about 3,000 pieces. Clearly, this was not a case of

some litter lout idly dropping the odd wrapper, but of deliberate place-, ment. While the paper is biodegrad able, it is most unsightly. Does any body know the reason for this spoil ing of the environment and who might be responsible?

ANTHONY A. COOPER, Peel Park Avenue, . Clithcroe.

The police should

abide by the law I HAVE lived owr the road from Clitheroe Police Station for most of my life and I have seen many people going in out out of the station, and, : surprisingly,' 99% of them are not police.

.- I have"seen a number of people getting tickets for parking on the comer of Market Street, near ander-

■ ton bosonnet and the police station,', and even if people are over.the

- “white line”-by just a foot then'it’s: ticket time, and that’s aboutithe only time they get out of their'office; But on Saturday I got home from

doing my errands to find a police .van half on and half-off the pavement and one to two metres over the line; J think this is, a th e s t ; s'tupfd%

Clitheroe Police, as the car park is only 10 yards ahead of where th e y ' were parked! If it was me or any other member '

of the public it would be a £60-or-y more fine.’Police or no police, it's ille g a l.-: ■ ■

Fence necessary,

but it needs paint I WAS reading the piece in las t week’s Clitheroe Advertiser about the railway and the fence which peo ple are saying looks an eyesore; The fence needed to be replaced as

it looked_a mess before, just like the banks that the railway runs through, overgrown with grass and weeds. People should understand that it

needed to be updated as a safty issue, to stop childern running onto the tracks, but please can it be painted so it will look better.

NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED BNP’s Britain is

not for rest of us THE political arena is not the friendliest, with wide-ranging dis-- agreements about issues from park- ingin Clitheroe, all the way up to the future of our country. , Harsh words are exchanged, char acters are ruined, lies told and it is easy to see why some will feel disen gaged from all of this. Despite all of. our quarrels, however, I believe that a basic level of decency and reppect can exist between the parties and their members because, ultimately, we are all just out to do what we think is best for our country and our communities. . . Some of us will be right and some

of us will be wrong, but that it for the public to decide. There is one party, however, that

does not seek the best for this coun try or for this community: the- BNP seeks to destroy communities by turning them against each other. Do we really believe that this organisa- • tion wants to build Britain up? ■. A party that wants to “send ’em

home” is a party that detracts from our prestige as a nation and one that spits in the face of every young man who went to his death fighting the kind of racist politics common to-

high levels of immigration, but the

- debate about that should be con ducted in a decent and intelligent, way, not by resort to fascism. Others will cite patriotism and to them I say that it is not patriotic, in any sense of the word, to .turn against one’s countrymen because of the colour of their skin, their religion or the fact that they were not always from this country. For the rest of us, regardless of our

own political persuasions, I hope that we can agree that the BNP’s , Britain is not our Britainl

These councillors

should resign! AGAIN we have another situation where the interest and views of the general public and businesses (the ones who pay the employees of Ribble Valley Borough Council/ Lancashire County Council and its elected councillors) are to ta l ly ignored by a total lack of decency

' and good manners by the people ; -involved in pressing forward a scheme th a t it appears no one wants___ , It appears that this scheme to

turn Moor Lane into a possible shoppers' nightmare was thought up by some misinformed LCC employees with the backing of the
