Toddler group is in danger of closing

by Faiza Af zaal. .

A PAREN'i' and tod dler group is under serious threat of clo sure.

. A “use it-or lose i t ”

appeal has- ' been launched by concerned volunteers a t the Jack and Jill Toddler Group, after a dovratum in the number of' people attending. The facility, which has

been running a t the Lower Hall of St Mary’s . ;

' Centre, for the past 25 years, is open every. Monday from 9-15 to :

butts, a spokesman fo r . the group, said it would be a devastating blow if the facility was to close.

children. Now it attracts only 15. Sandra added: “Our toddler group isn’t just a

■ “We need to a t tra c t ■ more people to come along, as we are not tak-. ing enough money on a weekly basis a t the moment to cover the room rent and th is is draining our reserves, which are rapidly deplet ing,” she said. The non-profit organ

isation, which is run by volunteers, opened in 1983 and in its heyday boasted 30 parents and

■ place for children to play, but i t is also a grea t source of support for mums, carers, grandpar ents and even dads, who can come along and share their experiences ■with other mums. “When you have your

first child, you need all the help you can get. I used to bring my child here and i t was a.big plus to be able to speak to other mums.” Mother-of-two Miss

Gwenno Jones (33), who has recently moved into the area, said the group is very im p o r tan t for young mums. “I t helps parents to

get out when it’s wet and it gives you a good start to the week. Being a mum can be very diffi cult, especially -with the high levels of energy in children,” she said. “At Jack and Jill, the •

children can play in a safe environment and mix with other young sters.” - Volunteer Sarah Sieezkowski (24), whose

two-year-old boy, Thomas, a t te n d s the centre, said: “I t will be heartbreaking to see the facility close. We need as much support as possible from people o u t there who can bring their chil dren and keep this -vital service going.” Admission is £1.50

(including refreshments) and children aged 0-3, accompanied by adults, are welcome to attend. Our picture shows the

parents and children at the imder-threat toddler group.

So, what do you think of the town’s market?

:

A NEW report out this week has suggested a complete regeneration of. Clitheroe's market site.’ On Tuesday, reporter Faiza

• ; Mr Richard Burney (53), who runs the fruit and vegetable stall D. and A. Burney and Sons with his brother, Andrew, said: “The market is good for us, but I know a lot of .stallholders are unhappy with it. “We used to have a lot of people

Afzaal visited the market and asked traders and customers for their-views. ■ .

selling clothes and make-up, but they cannot compete with the big ger stores selling cheap goods and decided to pve up. At our stall, we

; spedalise in home grown produce, which keeps us going., terms of changes, we would

r like to see more stalls on the mar- : ket selling a -wide range of prod- • 'nets. Parking seems to.be a major

? problem, too. That is one of the "'main th in ^ customers complain - about.-It’s not only about free parking, but the lack of parking

; spaces a-vailable in Clitheroe.’’ : Mr Abu Musa-(-35), who has.

' .been running the jeans stall for the ■past 20 years, said more publicity was needed to attract customers.

“I tra-vel around various differ

ent markets in the North-West, but have found that Clitheroe is the quietest. I t needs to be adver- . tised more. Instead of an outdoor one, it should be changed to an indoor market. This would attract shoppers to-come in all weathers. • There should be free parking on the market car park.

• ■ “Opening big stores in a small

town like Clitheroe is not the solu tion. This would take trade away from us and small businesses. I ’m selling my garments cheaper than I was 20 years ago! I’m finding it .; hard to compete -with supermar kets who are selling cheaper brands. Ribble Valley Borough

, Council has always thought of plans to move the Tourist Infor-

im a tio n Centre to the market. : What they need to look at first is a roof over our heads!” Butcher Mr Stuart Gradwell .

: (55), who is also the market repre- - sentative for stallholders who sell food, said:” Yes, I ’m'all for the ■: market being revamped, but it will;- be good to see a compact market, rather than all the stallholders spaced out in a large place.’! .; ■ Customer Simon O’Rourke (35),’ ■ ■ who -visits the market three times::

a week said: “It lacks atmosphere compared to other markets. A big change is needed, yet the tradir tional feel should remain.” Simon is planning to open a

mobility vehicle hiring business in the market in March. He says more shops and stalls -will encour age local people to stay and shop in Glitheroe rather than going o u t . of the area. He ailded: “The pro posal to create a pedestrianised area in Clitheroe is a brilliant idea. I t will not only improve safety, but will result in coirdort and enjoy ment of everyone using the area. This way, access for all people shall. be achieved, especially for wheel chair users.” ; A 31-year-old market shopper

who wished to remain anonymous told us: “Clitheroe is supposed to be a bustling market town - only the market is not bustling. There’s no atmosphere and that’s why it’s so empty.-1,would like to see it revamped and hi that I -would hke to see more choices of , retail goods sold. “I welcome the idea of more big

stores coming into Clitheroe as this will attract customers from-- far and wide. Also, more parking should be available.”
