First

A NEW choir was launched in the Ribble Valley on Monday night. More than 30 singers attended the

first rehearsal of the mbced-voice group based in Whalley. They rehearsed a widely-varied set

including the Slaves’ Chorus from Verdi's .‘‘Nabucco’’, the Sanctus from; Schubert's second “German Mass”, . the opening section of a Vivaldi “Glo-, ria” and a spiritual, “Down to the river to pray”.

. - . . Founder-conductor Glen Pate said:

“For a first rehearsal,'this was very encouraging. We had experienced choral singers and several who were taking part for the first time. “I am confident that this choir will

grow rapidly in performance skills, but we need more men for a better balance of voices. There are no auditions or voice tests and a love of singing is more important at first than ability.” He added: “I have already had

inquiries about concerts from a num ber of sources, but it’s early days and I don't intend to commit to anything until we are ready. We haven't chosen a name'for the choir yet, but I have one or two ideas in mind. I would welcome any suggestions.” ■The choir will meet again at English

Martyrs' RC Church, The Sands, Whalley, next Monday. Anyone inter ested is asked to ring 01254 824312 or ' go along on Monday.

pal Mr Michael Kennedy presented medals and certificates to the top three teams. The United States of America took

bronze and South Africa the silver, but it was Spain who stood on the winner’s podium and received gold as the Spanish national anthem was played and everyone stood to applaud the efforts of all the teams.

Make village

better place WHALLEY has been entered in the Lancashire hest-kept village compe tition in its 50th anniver- saryyear. Writing on behalf of

Whalley Action Group, Don Nicholson, who lives in Church Lane, states in a leaflet delivered to all households: “The assis tance and participation of everyone in the ■village should prove worthwhile. Even if we don't win, the attempt should make the village a better place for all.” The bid is supported

by the Parish Council, the Chamber of Trade, the Pickwick Committee and Scouts and Guides. Judges will visit the vil lage on two days between June 1st and July 13th. Working parties to

clean up the village - suitable clothing and bin bags required - are on Saturdays May 31st and June 28th, with everyone meeting in The Square at 10 a.m. The Action Group has

contacted local authori ties, United Utilities and the En'vironment Agency pointing out areas in which they can assist. The judges will be

looking for well-main tained private properties, including gardens, out buildings, driveways and hedges.

A NEW social networking site is ready for take off and could become the next darling of the internet

boom. From a small base in

Ciitheroe, a worldwide revolu tion is quietly under way. Flags are flying as people move to turn their towns and cities into their breakaway republics via BreakawayRe- publbc.com. The concept took more,

than 18 months to fine tune. ^ Founders Sheraz Arshad

and Matthew Cowan have been joined by technical guru Olli Aro and are watching closely as word slowly spreads about the virtual realm that provides all the trappings of sovereign statehood to every village, town and cityin the world. “Every town, village and

city on planet Earth as we know it has the ability to declare itself an independent republic, with its own flag, national anthem, constitution and much more. And every person in the world can join this new world as a citizen of

MP blasts plans to scrap rural phone boxes

PLANS to remove more tele phone boxes from rural areas in the Ribble Valley have been

slammed by Nigel Evans ME Speaking from Westmin

ster, Mr Evans said: “Once again, the implications of

removing such services as phone boxes will hit rural areas the most. “These phone boxes provide

the decision more vehemently. I t should be par t of BT’s remit to maintain the public service telephone boxes pro vide to those living in the countryside. “This applies especially to

elderly people who may not, have access to mobile phones. “Bit by bit we are eroding the traditional rural way of

life. ' “The number of post,

offices, schools, pubs and tele phone boxes in these areas are

dwindling and we do not pro vide enough support for farm ers or local small businesses. :, i; “I t is high time tha t the

Users can use the tools provided to interact with people they know or with people who share an affiliation with a given town or place. And for a limited time, all new users can claim one town completely free. Ownership of a breakaway

republic is unique, meaning that once a town or city has been claimed, no-one else can own it, except, of course, if the incumbent o™er chooses to trade the claim. In time, the three behind

the site hope that more than four million places across the

real world, with the subtle dif ference of there being four million countries instead of 192!” said Olli Aro. “Add to that the fact that anyone can claim free citizenship within a breakaway republic of their choice, and you’ve got a diverse and vibrant global ■ community coming together

in one cool place.” Our picture shows the new
