ELECTED on Tuesday, Kibble Val ley’s new mayor is former council leader and “man of the people” John

Hill, of Simonstone.... Rugby enthusiast Coun. Hill is steeped

in community life, being a borough coun cillor for Read and Simonstone for nine years and a member and former chair man of Simonstone Parish Council. He is a governor at Read and Simon

stone Primary Schools, a parochial church councillor at St John’s, Read, and church secretary at St Peter’s, Simon stone. He was also a founder member of Readstone United FC and the Friends of Read School. Cardiff-born Coun. Hill was scrum-

half at Clitheroe Rugby Club in the 1980s and was a main player in the con struction of the club’s former pa,vilion. He is also a former governor of Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and chairman of the school’s friends association. His distinguished 37-year career as a

local government legal officer has seen him work for city, borough, district, met ropolitan and county councils, which is a rare achievement. During his leadership

. of Ribble Valley Borough Council, he launched a grand tour of parish councils and community groups in a “battle bus” in a bid to take local government “back to the people”. His wife and mayoress Phillipa is a

practice manager in a medical centre. The couple have three daughters, Char lotte (23),.Alexandra (22) and 20-year- old Georgina and are local Rotarians.

Coun Hill’s chosen charities for his year in office are the caring-for-carers group Ribble Valley Crossroads, and Ribble Valley Guides and Scouts. Speaking after the “Mayor-Making”

ceremony, Coun. Hill said he was looking forward to the challenges ahead. “I am very honoured and privileged to be appointed as the 34th mayor of the bor ough and am looking forward to the year

ahead. “As leader of the council I was con

cerned with the administration of the borough whereas the office of mayor is a civic appointment. As the ambassador of the borough and first citizen, I will be promoting the wide-ranging diversity of opportunities that exist within fhe Rib ble Valley to improve the quality of life, tourism and economic prosperity as well as supporting my charitable causes for

the year.” Coun. Beverley Jones (Liberal Democ

rat) was elected as deputy mayor and her husband, Mr Howel Jones, a former Mayor of the Ribble Valley, as her con-

sort. .. : She was described as a multi-talented

and hard-working individual, who will bring style and grace to the role.- Our picture shows the new Mayor and

Mayoress of the Ribble Valley Coun. Hill and his wife, Phillipa (centre) along with Mr Jones (left), Mr David Morris, chief executive of the council, Mr Ian Porter, Nan Morris and deputy Mayor Coun. Mrs Jones after the annual “Mayor- Making” ceremony. (A130508/lb) .
