Haydn’s 38th Piano Sonata, explaining that Haydn was under-rated as a composer of piano music and not played as much as he should be. This was a very attrac tive piece in three move ments, proving her point. The second work in the

first half of the concert was Maurice Ravel’s

“Vaises Nobles et Senti- mentales”. This is defi nitely music for listening rather than dancing, despite being in waltz time. There are eight sec

tions and the work has originated from a compe tition in 1911, where the audience were asked to identify whose music was being played. This music is a real test of pianists where extra

, meaning can be given by ; the use of rubato - the : lingering on a note or moving on quickly ■with in the overall rhythm, a technique which can be

easily abused, but not by Katya. The whole second half

of the concert was devot ed to Moussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibi tion” in its original form, written in 1874. This is very much a descriptive piece, based on 10 of Vic tor Hartmann’s paint ings, inspired by a posthumous exhibition of his works in St Peters- burg in 1873. This was excellent

playing, with intelligent programming, gradually raising the emotional stakes. The audience’s pro

Impromptu No. 3 in G flat major, again beauti

fully played. KEN GEDDES

The summer concert

will be a t 7-30 p.m. on June 11th, with the Eblana String Trio, from the Royal Northern Col- lege of Music. They play in the Kib

ble Valley Borough Council Chamber, in Church Brow.

PERHAPS one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best-known works, “The Pirates of Pen zance” is being staged at Barnoldswick Civic Hall tonight, tomorrow and on Saturday. It is certainly one of the

most popular pieces in the repertoire of Barnoldswick Gilbert and Sullivan Soci ety, which is staging the

■ operetta for the fifth time in its 36-year history, largely due to popular demand. First performed at the

Opera Comique, London, in April 1880, The Pirates of

Penzance was an immediate

hit. Anticipating its populari

ty, Sullivan wrote a letter to his mother in 1879 as he worked on the new produc tion, stating: “I think it will be a great success, for it is exquisitely funny and the music is strikingly tuneful and catching.” In fact, “Pirates’! was the

debut production for the Barnoldswick society when it formed in 1972. Right from the start, the

society has drawn both per formers and audiences from

a wide area, including Kib

formed “The Pirates of Pen zance” in 1992. The new production will

benefit from the talented young Jane ; Wheeler dancers, the society having formed a very fruit ful alliance with the local dance school over the pas t few years, adding an extra dimension to its twice-year- ly shows. Phone Brian Hartley on
