www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk s maximum haul against champs
W H A L L E Y took maxi mum points for the first time in the new season as they won at champions Blackburn Northern. A bright opening part
nership, another promising knock from the profession al and a good all-round bowling show helped the
. locals to a convincing 12- point victory at Pleckgate on Saturday. After electing to bat on
a slow wicket, Whalle y captain Richard Palmer must have been very happy to see openers Mar tin Davies and Declan Fitzhenry cope more than adequately on a t r ic k y track that kept low and lacked pace.- F itzhenry had looked
set, but, having made a neat 25, he was caught by Ashfaq Patel off Pathan. : This brought Rajagopal
Sathish to the middle, and he too found it tricky, but
he is learning q uickly about the tracks, and
, adapted well before becoming a l it t le more adventurous.
, Davie s was' set firm when on 41 he was ridicu- lously fired Ibw for 41. Ne il Cordlingley then
joined the pro,'.but was unfortunate to play on for, just eight. B y now, the little smil-
ing Indian looked more at ease, and had shown the odd glimpse of his capabil ities with a couple of lusty blows, one soaring way
■ into the tennis courts. He went on to make a
solid 65 before holing out on the boundary as he aimed to speed things up,: taking just 54 deliveries to getthere.' The visitors looked set
for a score in excess of 200 at this stage, but again the middle order failed, and it was left to Stephen Booth
with a quickfire 20 at the',;
. end to see 'Whalley close ■ o n -196-9, a score than ' would prove to be plenty.
; After tea, a tight open ing spell from David O'Neil and Cordlingley set ■Whalley np, with just 15
■ runs coming from the first 12 overs, and two wickets down. It was always going to be a tough ask, and North-
: ern struggled to get the ball away, with the target soon up past the six-an- overmark.
- M a rk Fallon bowled a
reasonable spell from the , school end, and Sathish showed his value with
. three cheap wickets, and a catch from the deep, which he made look so simple. A couple of axe winding
clouts from Patel gave a the home side a glimmer of hope, but they were never ■ in a position to make a ■ game of it after the pedes
trian start. T h e , travelling band
from>Whalley got their wish when a run out ended the' Northern innings, enabling the Station Road side to take the points, and set them up for Saturday’s Ramsbottom cup tie with Earby at Station Road. • 'W H A L L E Y Under 13s eased through their cup game
against
Oswaldtwistle. Adam Robinson top-
scored with 15 as the home sidemadeSl. Steady all-round bowl
ing restricted Immanuel to 56. ■ - T h e Under 15s came close in their opening match against Clitheroe before going down by 14 runs.
' Chasing 106, Whalley
just came up short in the mid-nineties. - ■
Glitheroe are crushed Wanderers off course
C L I T H E R O E were crushed by 10 wickets at home to Edenfield on Sat urday. ■ In-form professional
Babar Naeem continued his stunning start to the new season with an unbeaten 106, coming off just 72 balls, after taking 3-68 as Neil Bolton’s men were restricted to 178-7. Naeem already has 303
runs for the season, from five innings, three not out, for an average of 151.5. Greg Smithson helped
Naeem knock off the required runs, Mth the tar get reduced slightly after rain, the visiting skipper, somewhat less punishing, but, nevertheless, finishing unbeaten on 50, coming off 74balls. It took Edenfield just
24.5 overs to compile the runs for victory, and climb to second in the table.. . Clitheroe, on the other
hand, have only one win after five games, as they he third bottom. The only real highlights
for the Chatburn Road side were the half century
from opener Nick James, who made 53 before being trapped by Naeem, and 36. from Peter Dibb, who also perished at the hands of the pro. Seven Clitheroe bats
men reached double fig ures,' but after getting starts, only James and Dibb could build signifi cant innings. Paid man Paul Turner
opened with James, but was bowled by Wi lliam Slinger for 18, and Slinger went on to claim 4-96 off 21 overs. ■ He also removed Bolton
(12), Carl Palmer (12) and Andrew Pearce (18), while Naeem’s third victim was Dan Glover (10). A total of 178-7 looked
competitive, but Smithson. and Naeem simply blew- the target away, frustrat ing six Clitheroe bowlers in an attack still trying to come to terms with the loss of Josh Marquet. Clitheroe must look to
bounce back on Saturday in the Ramsbottom Cup at Cherry Tree.
Record-breakers
A R E C O R D - B R E A K I N G : opening partnership, helped Chatburn seconds to victory over Sandy Lane as Marc Holmes and John Moore put on 144, smash ing 98 and 81 respectively. Clive Gawthorpe also chipped
in with 18 as the locals finished on a respectable 232-6, before some t ight bowling saw their opponents skittled for just 120. Chris Mulhearn (5-66) and
Geoff Lambert (4-49) did the' damage. ^Meanwhile, a fantastic all round display from Richard , ■ Shovelton earned the first team a .
thrilling tie with Long Lee.: He grabbed two wickets as
their opponents made 221-7 bat ting first, after winning the toss. And he then top-scored with
68 with the bat as his side made the same score, for the loss of eight wickets. . . However, despite the result,
they remain top of the Mewies: Solicitors Craven and District League Second Di-vision. .Ayrton was the hero for Long
Lee, smashing an unbeaten 119 including 15 fours and tour sixes,- with Paul Shorrock grabbing: . three wickets
for.Chatburn. :‘ >
A PO O R batting display saw Ribblesdale Wander ers lose by three wickets at
. Baxenden on Saturday. With professional Will
Purser and Ian Austin in the home s id e ’s ranks,
:. Wanderers faced a stern test when batting, but their nemesis proved to be G a ry Sudworth, who claimed 5-32 off 12.3 overs. Joe Scuderi’s side were
skittled for 106 inside 44 overs, with only the skip per - up against his old Lancash ire team-mate Austin - and former Colne man Gary Hunt providing any resistance. The Italian internation
al opened and top-scored with 46, coming off .104
■ balls. And but for Hunt, who
• came in at number six and added 31 off 55 deliveries, it would have been a much sorrier tale. ;
N o one else could join
the pair in double figures,. as A u s t in and Dominic Bulcock claimed two wick ets apiece, with Purser fin ishing with a sole scalp.. However, with the ball.
Wanderers made a fist of defending a meagre total, as Baxenden scraped through with seven wick ets down, courtesy of 42 from former Lowerhouse batsman Simon Payne. • ; D a v id Howard and
Richard Meade opened the attack, and the pair . removed the Baxenden top
■ order between them. Meade sent back open
ers Callum Waddington and Da vid Parkinson cheaply, while Howard dis missed skipper Mark Rish- ton and Austin. B u t .P a y n e proved a
pain for Ribblesdale, and. he later found support, from Purser (19) and Sud worth, who finished unbeaten on 11, as the Back Lane side passed the target.' Howard finished with 3-
v ..
37 of f 16 .overs, while: Meade (2-29 off 13) and Marcu s P ra t t (2-16 off seven) also recorded tidy figures.
■ .■
• On Saturday, Wanderers ■ are without a game as they have a bye to the Rams bottom Cup quarter-final.
Jimmy stars
S TA R man Jimmy Hargreaves contributed to a good victory for Clitheroe in the Darts Superleague.
,, He averaged 68.89 in a 3-1 success, as the
locals claimed an 8-2 success over Lancaster. Ha r ry , P ilk in g to n ; (62.62), Jason
Dewhurst (64.41), M ick Duxbury (58.55) and Phil Greatorex (67.29) all produced 3-0. mns, with Graham Crabtree (68.25), Mark i Guiver (66.34) and Rick Jones (62.25) all winning 3-2.
. ' ; Meanwhile, the ladies could only manage; a 4-4 draw at Daubhill.
.... Linda Waring (2-0,29.13), Audrey South-: well (2-1, 32.91), Lindsay Astin (2-1, 36.56) and star player Louise Proctor (2-1, 45.03) were the winners on the day. , •
, Jon Harvey
Harvey in seventh heaven!
P R O F E S S IO N A L Jon Ha rvey claimed seven wickets as Read stunned early'Veka Ribblesdale League - pacesetters Barnoldswick on Saturday. , The West Craven side
led the table going into the game , but Harvey, who won the. league with Barn oldswick’s ' derby rivals Earby in 1996, had a key role in inflicting their
, first defeat. : :. Barnoldswick took first
knock, and Harvey was • soon among the wickets as he had Luke Hodgson caught behind by K y le
. O’Connor for seven, with 16 on the board.
. And he gave Read ’s hopes a big shot in the arm when he removed his oppo site number Clinton Peake for the same score at 30. Veteran Paul Beech and
opener Matthew Nutter , took the score past the half-century, before former Nelson man Beech (18) became the second of four ■victims for O’Connor, with Harvey claiming his third wicket. ■ Read were fielding well, and this was emphasised as Nutter finally fell for a fine 34 at 71, as Joe Marshall pouched a wonderful catch at gully. The rest . of the
Barnoldswick order offered. little resistance as Harvey and K ur t Smithson, who returned excellent figures of 2-15 off eight overs, mopped up the tail. Harvey finished with 7-
51 off 16.5 overs as Barnoldswick were skittled in the 34th over for a mea gre 104. Harvey wasn’t finished
either, as the all-rounder was in great nick with the . bat too.
N ic k M arsh and
Michael Whalley put on 27 for the f irs t wicket, before the former w a s . bowled by Shaukat Sheraz for 16. . Harvey joined Whalley, and the pair eased towards the; target, sharing 53 before the pro fell for a 40- ball 34, which included six fours. ■.Whalley followed suit
without the score moving on, for 27, and though O’Connor could only add four, Marshall and Andrew
Turner saw the locals over the line in the 32nd over.'.' • •Read'now turn their, .
attentions to the Rams-' bottom Cup on Saturday, when they travel to face : holders Blackburn North ern. -

Valuable points
C L ITH E R O E Tennis Club A won 3-1 at 'Towneley on Saturday to earn a valuable four points in their title chase.
making his seasonal debut in sweltering heat, and the pair struggled initially to find their rhythm.'
Derek:Parrott was joined by Roger Ravenscroft, :
'
' Having lost the first set 6-3, they rallied to take the next 6-2, and then won the deciding set on a nail-biting tie-break. On the other court, Steve Pym and Tony Bush had too much class for a young second pair and won com
fortably 6-2,6-3. The return rubbers started in light drizzle that
quickly became torrential rain,-making the tarmac
courts extremely slippery. Parrott and Ravenscroft were making light work of .
their youthful foes, leading 5-2, while Pym and Bush were finding life uncomfortable against the top pair,
trailing 4-1. . • With the courts unplayable, it was agreed to share
the final matches, which was slightly unfortunate, as, strangely, Pym and Bush seemed convinced that they would have turned their match around. : , In the first fixture of the Mixed League Division One season, Clitheroe A turned out against champions
Parkwood. The Clitheroe second pair of Julie Pym and Phil
Mileham started nervously against the Parkwood sec ond pair, and soon went 4-1 down in the first set.; They then found their form and took the first set on
a tie-break, before running out easy winners in the sec-: ond set to take Clitheroe to a 2-0 lead in sets., : The Clitheroe first pairing of Jennifer Holgate and)
new-boy Nick struggled against the Parkwood first' pair, and'despite some heavy hitting from Nick and quality strokes from Jennifer, lost 2-0. In the return rubbers, Julie and Phil beat the Park-; wood first pair with some ease, 6-3 7-6.-;
;
Jennifer and Nick were still
struggling.to find their, form, and lost by a similar scoreline to the Parkwood
seconds. The match was dra4vn 4-4 in sets - a very creditable
early season performance against the reigning cham pions.

- Whalley cup win
A F T E R a disappointing start to the league season', Whalley Tennis Club bounced back in the Roscoe
'Trophy. The competition, for north west clubs, sees the win
ner decided by the best of nine rubbers, with three; double teams taking part.
.
; Whalley’s regular combinations of Andrew Moore and Henry Farrer at number one, and John Leithard and Tom Ormerod at number two, were joined by Gor^ don Pimperton and Roger Walker for the first round clash with Broughton. •
, ' • / Moore and Farrer quickly took a straight sets win
against the visiting number two pairing, and Leithard and Ormerod did the same against the number threes. = •
