A- GROUP of youngsters have paddled their way to a Sport England-backed canoe certificate. The-18-strong party of

11-14 year olds took part in the Paddle Power course at Clitheroe Canoe Club on Saturday. . And - having come

through with flying colours, they were each presented with a certifi cate by. the Mayor of the

PADDLE POWER!

Ribble Valley, Coun. John Hill.

. Paddle Power is a

national scheme which encourages youg people to get into canoeing by pro viding training, equipment loan, development and cer tification in water safety

and canoeing skils. r ■ ;The scheme is supported by RVBC as part of Sport Unlimited, a Sport Eng-

. land scheme which encour ages young people to artic- ipate in five hours of sport per week. Anyone interested in

taking up the sport is asked to visit clitheroeca- noeclub.org.uk • • The Ribble Valley

Good New Year anticipated

BOTH of Clitheroe Rugby Club’s senior fixtures fell foul of the frosty weather at the weekend. However, the first team game

against North Manchester has been rescheduled for this Saturday (kick off 2-15 p.m.). ‘ After a slow start to the campaign,

■captain Ben Graves' troops are beginning to show some good form at last. The stop-start nature of the

The presentation dinner fck place at the clubs 19th h o le - : th e Bayley,

oping centre partnership of Matt Bartle and Paul Callaghan is paying dividends. Needless to say, there are still a

few old warriors keeping the younger ones on their toes, such as back rower Andrew Rigby and Steve Dowson in the second row.

■ Nearly halfway, through the Sea

son, the side currently lie seventh in the North Lancs Second Division table. But while that may not be some--

thing to rave about, on current form, a decent New Year can be anticipated. Meanwhile, the table-topping sec

ond string, the Cavaliers, have a free. weekend. Simon Rawstron's men are up

there on merit, but a closer inspec tion of the fixtures will sound a warning bell.

In fact, after a preponderance of

home games, all of January’s fixtures- are away from Littlemoor. Again, new and old faces are com

bining well; John Procter still plugs away at the coal face, along with Geoff Williamson, Graeme Tindall and Brian Wood. ■ But pleasingly, new blood has

arrived, in the shape of Martin Yeo man in the back row, Dan Witton and Martin.O'Connor in the three- quarters, plus some former colts like Danny Cowgill,- Richard Murray, Chris Williams and the effervescent Rigby twins, Ben and Ed. . Things are looking promising on

the pitch at Littlemoor, and with the addition of a smart clubhouse setup, as good as any for a club of a similar size, it’s ail systems go for the town team.
