Spectacular night of dance music

A YO U TH c lu b n ig h t h e ld a t The Grand, . Clitheroe, has been hailed a great success.

In addition to the event being great ■ The venue was packed to capacity

with young clubbers at the N-R-G club night, which is set to become a regular event. They were treated to a spectacular

night of dance music, a live band, and great food, all in the state-of-the-art facility. Throughout the night, Manchester

band LZ7 put on a fantastic perform ance with Lindz West at its forefront. She also hosted the evening with DJ Lewis Read, who played a high-ener gy set of party hip hop. Numerous competitions were held,

with winners walking away with prizes that included free pizzas and drinks. However, the star prize of the night was two VIP tickets to the MEN Arena to see McFly, supported by local boy band Avenue. Two lucky young ladies, Beth Aspinall and Daisy Cockle, of Blackburn and Clitheroe, won the top prize after entertaining the crowd in a “sing off” competition.

fun, it was also safe, thanks to The Grand’s partnership with the local police. As well as professional door staff,

three Clitheroe police officers were on hand a t the entrance prototyping a new “security arch”. The portable arch, similar to those found at airport security checkpoints, ensured a safe environment in the venue. The Grand’s ongoing commitment

to deal, in partnership with the police, -with alcohol abuse, particularly with young people in the Ribble Valley, also ensured the event was a great success. “We have created a place for the

youth of the Ribble Valley, which is great fun as well as being safe, so secu rity and safety are as important on the night as the entertainment,” said David Trott, business manager at The Grand, ; The next JST-R-G club night at The

Grand will be held on Saturday, December ,20th. It will once again be supported by a police presence and the security arch. '

Watchdog’s criticism of the council

RIBBLE Valley Bor ough Council has been criticised by the Local Government Ombuds man for its handling of a planning application. A complaint was made

by Mr Ron Loebell„of Edisford Road, Clith eroe, regarding an appli cation to install a ground mounted wind turbine between Edisford chang ing rooms/Roefield site and Ribblesdale Swim ming Pool, with a 9m. high column and 5m. high elegant helical (twisted) designe'd blades. The plans were approyed by the council on June 20th, 2007. Mr Loebell argued

that the council did not fully consult residents about the application and did not take into account any visual or noise disturbance-from the development. The borough council

will now ensure that the national planning policy for renewable energy, PPS22, is specifica lly referred to in future plan ning application reports. The complaint is now

closed after it was record ed as local settlement by the Ombudsman.

Valley’s Down in Paris pair are really on the up

TWO Ribble Valley lads are making waves in the music industry with their band Down in Paris. • Consisting of Langho’s Ben Kirton

on guitar and vocals, West Bradford’s Tom M-ileham on bass and Josh Mcr Keown, of Bolton, on drums, the band has already enjoyed air time on the radiostationXfm. i' , I

- Following the broadcast, the response was phenomenal, with listen ers texting the station to rave about: the band’s single-“ Certain'Not T o -

■Win”. ■ 1 The 18-year-old musicians hope to

appear on Sky television in the next few weeks. -

•-. The group got together after Ben

and Tom met while they were pupils at Bowland High School. :Ben then went on to meet Josh while he was, taking a course in graphic design at Blackburn College.' . . .

. , The band; who have already played

■ a gig at a top Manchester venue, take their name from George Orwell’s book “Down and Out in Paris and London Their music, which is written by the band,' has a sinister feel to it through : the use a strong sound and dark lyrics.
