Pep up for party Memories of Italian Christmas...

BUON,Natale.That’s;Ital- ian for Happy Christmas. We were saying it to our friends back in the 1960s. But we weren’t in Italy.

This was Brierfield. In the ’50s and ’60s, quite a

few Italian people left their homeland and came to the UK. My parents were among them. They started life in England at

the Springbank Hotel in Nelson, which is sadly derelict."-At thati time, one of its functions wm to^' take in immigrants and help' them learn English:That’s where; my mum arid dad met: At first, she wouldn’t have anything to . do with him; but one evening he. wore abrown suit ahdbe must; have looked quite hand^me in i t : because she finally gaveiin and : agreed to gobiit with him: ’ f'- - ■

back and watching my mother., pick out aubergines, artichokes, olives, garlic, peppers and other various foods, which were con-. sidered strange then. Parmesan - cheese before it’s grated looks like a big yellow toe nail and in my opinion doesn’t taste much ■ better. - Visitors came and went

through the holiday period. I; remember the evenings as being particularly raucous. The women, having cooked and cleaned all day, sat and chatted while the men gathered around - the table and played cards. This wasn’t the sedate, polite

pastime you might imagine.: Cards were thrown down, accu sations were hurled a t one

another and the winner would leap to his feet and yell. This would carry on into the early hours of the morning, long after the women and children had gone to bed. Of course, we did a spot of vis

iting ourselves. Our social lives

•were a veritable whirlwind. My sister and I received pres-.

ents, not only from our parents but from our Italian friends as well. They weren’t much - things like a toy car, plastic weighing scales or a little doll - but then we didn’t expect much and were happy.with any little novelty. - - '. -■ ^ Moments I remember? Mid

night Mass, atmospheric and candle lit. It reminded us what Christmas was really supposed to be about. The children’s party at the workingmen’s club; we played games and on leaving, were all given chocolate and tan gerines.

; • I remember a'house full of

friends, all speaking in the musi cal tones of our beautifuMtalian language as we wished one another‘Buon Natale’.-

NHS Direct spokesperson Jacqui Jedrze- ■ .

jewski suggests making a few adjustments to your routine, to see.you through those late nights and early mornings. "Eating at regular intervals, not skipping

breakfast, and getting enough sleep, are good ways to help you maintain your ener gy levels," she says. "Choose foods that are digested slowly.

Wholegrain rye bread, porridge, pasta, beans, lentils and noodles are good choices and contain slow-release energy which may help prevent you from feeling lethargic dur- ing the day. Jacqui points out that the foods we turn

to when we're hungover or skip meals can often make us feel the worst. ■ "Foods that are high in sugar, such as

chocolate, cakes, biscuits, and fizzy drinks, might give your body an instant energy rush. But, after the initial rush, your sugar levels will drop. And as they fall, so will your

energy levels. As a result, you'may find it. more difficult to concentrate or you may feel • irritable and tired. Likewise, drinking too: much caffeine, found in tea, coffee, and cola drinks, can leave you feeling anxious, and restless." • None of which is good news for those plan ning to hit the office Christmas party -with ^ a bang. Jacqui explains that wjiile mince pies might: taste nice, they don't contain every thing you need to look and feel great. . ; I- "There are essential nutrients that your

body needs in order to work properly. Fruit and vegetables are rich in -vitamins and min erals so you should eat at least five portions a every day. Fats and sugars contain more energy than any other food group and so should make up the smallest part of your- diet.".- . ■ - Finally, Jacqui suggests that exercise will-

not only bum off those extra party, pounds, but keep you finally festive.. • . • ■ "If you exercise.regularly, you will benefit

from the. feelgood factor that you get after wards. This is due to a release of a chemical called serotonin within your brain. Serotonin is-your body's way of making you feel hap pier and less stressed." :
