A local lad who helped British cyclists take on the world in Beijing is a hit with Probus

by Natalie Cox.

A LOCAL la d w h o h e lp s B r it ish c y c l i s t s w in go ld m ed a ls was: th e g u e s t of C lith e roe and: D is t r ic t : Probus Club.

With a job specification which

read “help Great Britain to win gold medals for cycling” and a philosophy when it comes to rivals of “total annihilation”; speaker Peter Taylor - known as “Spike” - left cliib members uplifted, exhilarated and totally

won over to his personal philoso phy.

. Mr. Taylor is a local lad - he ■ • ■

was bom and lives in Langho. ; A former pupil of Ribblesdale- High School, he,started cycling

. in Southport while earring out cycle repairs. . A stranger requested some

out-of-the-ordinary repairs to a bike and Spike must have made' a good impression.because a couple of weeks later he was in California looking after the' equipment of an international mountain bike team;

Currently the “Mechanical

Services Manager” to the GB team with a budget of £18.5m, the results from the Beijing

■ Olympics demonstrates how successful Spike has been in his .•role of ensuring the team has

: nothing but the best equipment. • He passed round a “solid”

:: wheel and said to Probus Club members: “Be.careful. It costs £20,000,” r Probus members were very careful. , Almost everything except the

chain was British designed and therefore unique to the GB team

giving them an enormous psy chological advantage - they have the best, therefore they are

the best. Mr Taylor said work spreads

across both the cycling and FI racing worlds, as use is made of the FI Southampton wind tun nel. Other technical exchanges are being discussed. Such was the interest in his

talk that the audience asked questions throughout, continu ing 'with an enthusiastic official

question time. ■ ■ Dra'wing on his youthful expe

rience as an amateur cy clist, vice-chairman Brian Nightin gale proposed a heartfelt and enthusiastic vote of thanks for such a “feel good” presentation. • Clitheroe and D is tr ic t

«paU- ? Online local shopping ;‘While nqbpdjr can, denjf the co’ nven- : ience of some'of the big online retailers, ’

ADVERTISING FEATURE

it's important not to forget that many local stores have an internet shop too. If the thought of carrying all those ba g s, fills you with dread, or time is jus t scarce, then shopping online is for you but it need not mean missing out on those original and unique gifts that you only get from local suppliers.

No "big shop" One feature of the season is that big

pre-Christmas food shop - that trip to where we buy enough food and drink to keep an army going for months! Instead of struggling with dozens of bags to and from the car, why not start now and buy a few extras with each weekly shop. Non-perishable items, like tinned food, drinks and even loo-roll can be bought in plenty of time, meaning that it's just the turkey and a few other fresh things. you need to pick up nearer to Christmas day.'

■ Batteries not included Don't forget to buy batteries and

plugs! With so many gifts being elec- , tronic, you're.bound to need some, so think ahead. Plus, you could think green and. give re-chargeable batteries with any battery operated presents. ;

Treat yourself .. Don't forget about yourself. If most o f .

the Christmas organising, arranging, cooking and buying falls to.you'then treat yourself. Whether it's those ear rings you spotted; a make-over or a weekend away, make sure your .Christ- ; mas isn't just about everyone else.

■ Don't do it yourself . Why should mum spend hours in the kitchen preparing those sprouts when: everyone else is sat in front of the T'V?:

. Why.not let someone else make Christ mas dinner and do the washing up this ■. year by going out to eat? Many hotels; and restaurants offer a'range of Christ-; mas menus, from the traditional to th e . exotic and by the time you've worked;, out the cost of the shopping you won't; hS’Ve to do, ypu'll probably find.it's not as expensive as you think.
