Fiarmer’s disasters ends in court

A TRIPLE prize-winning livestock fanner failed to dispose of 67 sheep carcasses after a “catalogue of dis asters”, a court heard. . Stephen Peel, who won prizes at

the Royal Lancashire Show in 2006, including Breed Supreme Champion, Reserve Overall Cham pion and Best Show Champion for the best small flock, appeared at Hyndburn Magistrates last Wednesday. Peel (54), of .Brookhouse Green

Farm, Dale Head, Slaidburn, pleaded guilty after being prose cuted under trading standards

laws. M ag is tra te s heard how ill-

health, a rise in farm prices and d r- cumstMces beyond his control led

to this neglect. In February of this year, officers

discovered the bodies of 67 dead

sheep in various stages of decay, on a section of Peel’s 100-acre land. Mr Nick McNamara (prosecut

ing) said: “After the discovery of : illness, had prevented him from dis-

interviewed and admitted the sheepwSe his. He told the officers that the farm had been experienc ing financial difficulties towards the end of 2007. This, coupled with

poangthem.” : •• The Animal By-Product Regu-

' ' lations 2005 requires farmers to dis- pose of fallen livestock without

: undue delay. , - : - Failure to dispose promptly of ' carcasses risks the spread of disease

. to other animals and can lead to ■ contamination of surroimding land

and watercourses. Mr John Houldsworth (defend

ing) explained that sheep prices had taken a tumble last year and that had affected his business and triggered depression. He added that in Christmas last year, Mr Peel had developed flu, as did his wife and 13-year-old daughter.

In a double whammy, his daugh

ter had woken one morning unable to move one side of her body. “While she was at hospital

undergoing tests for a suspected brain tumour, Mr Peel was divert ed from his farm duties,” revealed Mr Houldsworth; “His sheep spent all -winter out

side and unbeknown to him, he Imd a problem with his flock. Last hut not least, Mr Peel’s quad bike had broken down and he was not able to check on all animals as usual and he has no farm help.” The cause of deaths were

unknovyn, but a second flock had been unaffected. Mr Houldsworth went on to

say: “This is a very sad day for Mr Peel. He has been a farmer all his life and has an excellent track record. It seems a catalogue of dis asters caused by farm prices, ill health and circumstances beyond his control led to this blip. Ma^trates ordered Peel to pay a fine of £300 and £385 court

costs. Speaking after the case, Mr

McNamara, said: “Failing to dis pose of dead livestock can have

serious consequences, both for farmers and the environment. “Offences can lead to unlimited

fines or a long jail term, so it is •vital that farmers identify carcass

es and properly dispose of them without delay.”
