(“Hobson’s Choice”; Clitheroe "Amateur Operatic and Dra matic Society.

I HAD never pre-viously seen a pro duction by the Clitheroe Operatic arid Dramatic Society, so Hobson’s Choice seemed like the perfect place

to start. A Lancastrian comedy by Harold

Brighouse, set in 1880s Salford, the action revolves around Willie Mossop, a young and talented shoe-maker who is employed by Henry Horatio Hobson. After increasing Hobson’s business

reputation, Willie is lured into marry ing Hobson’s eldest'daughter, Maggie, and the two set up their own shoe shop. Within a year they have taken most of Hobson’s trade. :

. '

.. It is only when Hobson is diagnosed as a chronic alcoholic that Willie offers to go into partnership with Hobson on

: the condition that he takes no further part in the business - hence the term “Hobson’s Choice”;

. ^ It was clear to see that the actors

enjoyed the play and there were some fine performances all round. Brian Whittaker’s portrayal of Hob

son was nicely crafted and his well- timed delivery and interactions with the audience added an extra dimension to the part, which kept the humour flowing.

Richard Sanderson did well in the

role of Willie Mossop and I particularly liked his transformation into a hard- nosed businessman at the end of the play. Vibrancy was added to the evening

through Hobson’s three daughters and the way they contrasted with each other.

. , Maggie Hobson as the no-nonsense

eldest daughter was played by Lesley Haworth and she performed admirably. ■ Rebecca Hindle was suitably “bump

tious” as young Vickey Hobson and her range of facial expressions was excellent throughout, giving her character a real edge.

, . Middle daughter Alice Hobson was K^Burnley Mechanics it

played by Wendy Ranwell and her accent and delivery were fantastic. ' Other notable performances included

James McKinlay as the staid, yet strangely likeable lawyer,'Albert Pross er, and Edward Hacking -with a dry and: laconic portrayal of factory owner Fred Beanstock. The pace of the performance w a s .

generally good although it did dip occa sionally. It was always quickly recov ered, however, and the comedy contin ued throughout. :

' The costumes were excellent and the

set was functional, although I feel that more could have been done to show the

demise of Hobson’s business between acts.

\

■ There should also be an honourable mention for Brian Haworth, who stepped into the part of Tubby Wadlow at the last minute. He put in a very able performance and if i t hadn’t been announced at the start of the night then I certainly wouldn’t have known. If my Hobson’s Choice is to see

another play by the Clitheroe Operatic and Dramatic Society then it is not a difficult one - 1 am already looking for ward to their next show.

Ghat about painting

ARTIST, Peter Taylor, of The Old Bakehouse Gallery, in Eshton Ter race, is always being asked if he provides courses in painting. The answer has

■always been no - and it still is, but in an effort to help anyone get started, or advice to people who already paint, Peter is

■holdinganopendayathis gallery. There is no charge and you can take along your own paintings for cri tique if you -wish. Peter said: “I work in a

representational, but fair- ■ ly loose style and can give

, some pointers to get you started or progress. I won’t be giving advice on abstract or extreme photo realism. If you paint and just want a chat, please come along.” The open day at The

Old Bakehouse Gallery, is on Saturday, November 8th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
