Mill H i l l ...................................2 Rimington . . . . . . . . . . . . .-.2 i RIMINGTON were robbed of victory in the fifth minute of ■ stoppage time.

;

; , The visitors, without Curtis and Penman, were unsteady at the start, as another different back four faced two tricky for wards.

, Just when they appeared to ' If ( f --

have weathered the early storm, the referee awarded a dubious free kick to the home side and they opened the scoring. Chris Heslop broke away and

had a great chance tipped round the post by the Mill Hill keeper, and then Lloyd rose to meet a Steve Wharton cross but his loop ing header bounced off the bar. Another Heslop effort led to

another corner, and O’N eill’s cross was met by Dinsdale, who thundered in an equaliser on the stroke of half-time.' The second half was end-to-

end stuff, with both keepers mak ing vital saves, Anderson tipping one Mill Hill effort on to the bar and then smothering the ball at the feet of the onrushing forward to thwart another attack. , A flowing move down the right

involving Walsh and Wharton led to the ball reaching Lloyd, and he curled a beauty into the far cor ner to put the table-toppers ahead.

'\Vt' And it was a lead they held

until deep into stoppage time, when the home side made the most of a poor back pass. Although disappointed to be

pegged back so late in the game, it could be a vital point at the end of the season. Rimington.will be hoping to

return to winning ways on Satur-' day when they make the trip to play Read United (kick-off 2 p.m.).

Dog Inn ................... .......... . . 2 Clarence . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 DOG Inn's losing run continued with this defeat at Wilson's, but anyone at the game will have been left wondering how the Whalley side ended up on the wrong end of this scoreline. Sporting a stunning grey and

Dog lose

gold kit donated by new sponsors Derbyshire and Co. Accountants, the Whalley side made the brighter start, but conceded against the run of play while defender Craig Barnes was off the field with a head wound. . Then, after having what looked

a perfectly good goal ruled out. Dog saw Clarence double their lead from a corner. They made a much better start

Rimington Reserves ,. . . .11 Goodshaw United . . . . . . . .Or:

.RIMINGTON bounced back:: from defeat in fine style with an ■ emphatic win despite having five : regular players missing. The scoring started in the

eighth minute as Leach fired home from six yards from Shields’ corner.

. The home team welcomed back last term’s top'scorer, ■'Gary Brunskill, for his first game of. the;: season and it didn’t not take him” ' long to pick up where he left offl .' • On 17 minutes Carter prodded

the ball forward on the edge of . the box for Brunskill to stroke the : ball past the keeper. And on 24 minutes, Brunskill

added his second as he fired a 25- yarder into the top comer! - ■

The home side kept up the

dominance and soon added a- fourth as Threlfall fired into the bottom comer and shortly after wards, Carter found space on the left and his pin-point cross was missed.by both Brunskill and Threlfall but the ball found the net as the retreating defender could do nothing but turn it in. .. ■ On the stroke of half-time

Rimington added their sixth as Carter’s pass found the feet of Leach'who swung at the ball, missed it completely but made no mistake at the second attempt! ■ With just four minutes of the

second half played. Shields was tripped in the area and Bmnskill completed his hat-trick from the spot. •

’ ■ ■. Substitute Andrews went on a

dazzling run to eventually find Threlfall who stmck his second of the game with a neat finish from the edge of the box to make it 8-01 And eight minutes later. Rim

ington had their ninth as Leach’s shot looked to be going wide only for the full back; to shin the ball intothenetl. Andrews got in on the act with . a mazy run. His shot was parried

. by the keeper but went straight back to his feet and his back-heel madeitlO-0. Man-of-the-match Shields got

his reward as a curling right-foot er found the corner to complete therout. ■ Rimington face a tough test on Saturday with bogey side Burn ley Grammar Old Boys at home.

Green close the gap Hurst Green.............. .. ..8

Read Uni ted. . . . . . . . . . . . . 0 THE Hurst Green faithful were treated to another goal fest on Saturday as their favourites took their tally to 17 goals in two. games. Green.were forced into two

changes as Danny.Woodhead came in to replace Young in goal and Chris Leighton replaced the injured Danny Taylor. The home side pressed their

visitors early on,; forcing errors and playing quick, attacking football. ' Paul Chippendale began pro

ceedings as early as the fourth minute when he converted an Ian Lang cross, and minutes later Read failed to clear a Hurst Green corner, Bamber fed Chip pendale in the area, and he turned quickly to double the lead. Simon Tipton made it three

after only 10 minutes with a smart finish, and Leighton scored Green’s fourth on 15 minutes as

■his free kick slipped under the keeper’s body. ' The -visitors only tested Wood-

. head once, the keeper making a reflex save. Hurst Green looked comfort--

able in possession as they contin ually got around the back of the visitors,- with Chippendale and Walker looking too hot to handle up front. . Walker ■ got the goal he

deserved when he bamboozled the defence with his footwork and finished smartly, following more good work from Chippendale. . The home side 'were awarded a

penalty 10 minutes into the sec- 1 ond half as Dewhurst was cal lously scythed down, and Chip pendale coolly despatched the penalty. , .

Chatburn............ ...11 Grassinglon . . . . . . . . . . . .

.0

ON the back of a six game win ning streak and an 8-1 thriller the previous weekend, the home crowd were expecting big things. And within minutes the first

goal was on the board when Hol- gate slid in to meet a Mark Sulli- van cross.

*

.. The second soon followed when Holgate launched himself at a low cross and met it with a diving header. After a brief scare at the other end, a deep corner from Sullivan

to the second half, only for slack defending to give Clarence a third goal. .

. Dog's heads never dropped and they deservedly pulled a goal back, Chris Grimshaw setting up Nathan Ball for a superb turn and finish. .Another Dog goal would have

set up a grandstand finish, but it was Clarence who took advan tage of another lapse by the Whalley side. ' '•

' was flicked on by Fallon, and was met with a left foot volley by cap tain Lee Evans for his first of the season.

. ' Within seconds Chatburn had ,

four and Holgate a hat-trick when again he got behind his man - to meet a Fallon cross.' - ; . ' Half-time came but brought no -

respite for Grassington. : Within-moments of the restart >

. it was five, when a deep ball from Evans found Sullivan, and his clever layroff found his brother, Richard, who then put a deep ball:

the top corner. Straight from the kick-off

Chatburn won the ball back, a Musgrove shot was deliberately handled and a penalty given; which was handed to Chatburn keeper Russell Braithwaite.

■' ••With all the coolness of a pro-

f' lific striker, Braithwaite sent the keeper the wrong way and slotted the ball in the opposite comer. ' • With the Chatburn, fans

screaming for 10, the players weren't about to ease up, with Mark Sullivan and Musgrove both going close.

. .

Number seven soon came when Kirk Evans rose above everyone

;to power home a.header, and Musgrove claimed number eight with a brilliant bit of individual skill, beating two men before net- ting^the goal his hard work deserved. ; Goals nine and 10 came from ' Mark Sullivan and he completed

-. his hat-trick, when he.beat his man to knock home from another • Fallon cross.

' •- Chatburn would like to thank

;, into the box which beat everyone, ■ including the keeper, and found

- Harrison's Tyre Depot for spon- - , soring the game.

The game’s first red card

arrived with 20 minutes to go, as the -visiting centre back was sent off for foul and abusive language, and the referee struggled to con trol the game from then on as more dangerous tackles were committed. Chippendale then grabbed his

fourth as he headed in a Leighton corner, before Tipton headed for an early shower as he was red- carded for an off-the-ball inci dent.

Green still hadn’t finished scor

ing as Chippendale scored his fifth and (ireen’s eighth, as he tapped in following the keeper’s fumble.

- Hurst Green travel to'Bank Hall to play fourth place Worsthorne on Saturday (kick off 2 p.m.), hoping to continue their current goalscoring form.

Trophy dream over

■ from back page handed an unexpected lifeline when, after Craig Sargeson’s cor ner was returned to him, his cross took a wicked bounce and was shovelled into his own net by the United keeper.; . That perked the Blues up, with •

Lomax forcing a good save, before in the second-half, Lomax’s lob : sailed just wide of the post while Margarson produced a smart save to deny Lomax’s drive. From Sargeson’s resulting cor-

■ ner, Jonathan Smith stole a yard' ; of space to volley past the keeper and bring the scores back level. ; Boston almost grabbed the

lead again when both Stewart Talbot and Wes Parker saw firm efforts cleared off the line, but it wasn’t long before Rowan swept . the ball hbme at the back post. ; And the killer fourth arrived

when substitute Liam Parker.. smashed the ball home after good . play down the right.

. Fearon then made a fantastic save to deny Adam Millson from -

, point blank range, while Froggatt -:. : somehow volleyed over.: i ; . , :But a fifth goal would have

. been harsh on the Blues, as they ; : ■ left the field with their heads held.' highland their pride intact.

Clitheroe Cavaliers . .19 Chorley 2nds......... .. .28 CLITHEROE Cavaiiers were beaten by the clock against Chorley at Little- moor - the latest fixture in their promising league campaign. Chorley drew first blood

and moved into the lead with a try near the posts, after some good driving from the forwards and clean running from their backs. With the try converted,

the remainder of the first half turned into a Hal lowe’en horror show for the home team. After sustained pressure

through the forwards and half backs, Chorley pressed into the Clitheroe 22, breaking blind from the base of the ruck, and only the' cover tackling of the back row prevented Chor ley notching another score. ■ At the following stop page for a set scrum, the true cost of the titanic defence was known, as Chris Williams lef t the field of play -with a broken nose. On came Curphy, and

following the scrum, Chor ley attacked down the open side again to go in under the posts. From the restart the

Cavaliers tried, to force , themselves back into the.

game, a tactic which often leaves any team open to counterattack. Such was the case, as the

visiting back line chose some good running lines to sluice through the home defence - try converted, 21 points down at home - it was time for the Cavaliers luck to turn. A long restart from

Keogh saw Clitheroe surge- up into the Chorley 22, with Maroon and Gold shirts darting everywhere, putting Choriey under real pressure for the first time ■ in the game. A frantic attempt at a

clearance kick saw Wood charge down and Danny Cowgill touch down to show his brother how. it ’s done. ■

• • The conversion was

taken, and the Cavaliers started the second half in the same way, with Cur phy charging like a run away bullock, King testing the visiting back line with gazelle-like running, and Keough looking like a hun gry pig searching for truf fles as he sniffed out the try line. Then, against the run of

play, the Chorley stand-off took a pass on a narrow blind-side and took off to run in a try from 60 yards. ■The conversion was added, but that proved

only to galvanise the home team to raise their level again. Curphy crashed though

to slide into the try area and get some points back, the gap narrowed further with the conversion suc cessful. At 28-14 down with 20

minutes to play, the Cava liers started to play some great rugby. Again i f was the for

wards who started the trek up the pitch from inside their own half, driving hard into the Chorley pack. Edging into the Chorley

half and towards the 22, the ball broke blind with Gretton, who smashed his way through to score - only to be called back for a foot in touch. . The smiles on the visi tors’ faces were short-lived as the ball spun through the backs’ hands to send Keough over for the try, the conversion was missed, hut the Cavaliers were clawing their way back. Unfortunately, they ran

out of time, and while some late surges looked promising, the final whistle went. Tomorrow, both teams

are in league action as the Cavaliers entertain Black pool, and the first team travel to Carnforth.
